Ensure that you disable all antivirus and anti-spyware software prior to performing an upgrade. If you cannot boot off the Windows Vista installation media when attempting to perform a new installation, check the computer s BIOS configuration. You need to configure the BIOS to allow you to boot off the optical media drive prior to booting off the hard disk drive. If BIOS appears to be configured correctly, as shown in Figure 2-14, physically check that all cables and connectors to the optical media drive are securely connected.

If, when performing an installation or an upgrade, the volume that you want to install does not appear in the Where Do You Want To Install Windows dialog box, you will need to load a hardware device driver so Windows Vista can recognize the hard disk. Alternatively, shut down the computer and check that the hard disk that hosts the destination volume has all cables firmly connected. Be sure to run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor against your computer prior to performing the installation and check the compatibility report. It is possible that Windows Vista drivers do not exist for a critical piece of hardware. Until these drivers are available, your computer might not function. Alternatively, if the computer is used for a particular purpose, such as interfacing with special equipment, the computer might function fine, but with no drivers the equipment will not. From the perspective of those who need the equipment, this would be a failed upgrade. It is impossible to perform an in-place upgrade unless there are at least 11 GB of free space on the volume containing the original installation of Windows Vista. If you have fewer than 11 GB free, you will need to use Windows Anytime Upgrade. If the Windows Vista installation media is damaged and you cannot perform an installation, you will need to contact the vendor you purchased it from for a replacement.
Lesson 3: Troubleshooting Installations and Upgrades
If the Windows Vista installation media has become damaged and you want to upgrade from one version of Windows Vista to another, it is still possible to use the Windows Anytime Upgrade media to perform an upgrade. If you do not have access to the Internet, it is possible to upgrade to another edition of Windows Vista only if you perform an in-place upgrade or if you have the Windows Anytime Upgrade media. You can only perform an upgrade from within Windows. You will not have the option of upgrading if you boot off the installation media. If you are configuring a computer to dual boot with Windows XP, ensure that you install Windows Vista after you install Windows XP. If you reinstall Windows XP after you have installed Windows Vista, it will cause problems with the boot menu. You can resolve this problem by running Startup Repair off the installation media. It is also possible to resolve this problem using the bcdedit.exe application, although this involves complex operations from the command line.
Real World
Orin Thomas In some cases, a failed upgrade is in the eye of the beholder. While writing this book, I purchased a Tablet PC so that I could test out some of the technologies I write about in 13, Configuring Mobile Devices. The Tablet PC came with a pre-installed copy of Windows XP Tablet PC. In Windows XP the tablet worked great. Flipping the screen around resulted in an automatic change from portrait to landscape mode, and the tablet was able to seamlessly connect to the local 802.11g wireless local area network (WLAN). When I upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate, I learned that the software that told Windows to shift from portrait to landscape and allowed the WLAN to be started did not work with Vista. I could change the screen manually by going through the Control Panel, but I d have to wait until drivers were released before the WLAN was fixed. I can live with that because I am aware that a problem with being an early adopter of technology is that not everything will work from the beginning. However, if I had been upgrading the Tablet PC for someone else, say a company executive or someone from a sales department, that person would probably have considered the upgrade a failure. The success of an upgrade depends on whether a user is happy with the result. Someone who is used to Tablet PC functionality is not going to be too excited when told that it will not behave like a tablet until the vendor gets around to releasing some updated drivers at some undefined point in the future.
