Errors with a computer s physical memory can be very difficult to diagnose. A computer that has RAM problems can work perfectly for weeks and then randomly freeze three times in half an hour. Crashes are usually easier to diagnose because they occur when the same set of actions are replicated. As mentioned in 1, Installing Windows Vista Client, prior to upgrading to the WDDM graphics adapter, my laptop computer would always crash if I tried to play video files. Crashes caused by RAM hardware errors are so frustrating because they seem to occur randomly. You might be playing a video when the first crash occurs, browsing a website when the second crash occurs, and playing solitaire when the third crash occurs. When you encounter a computer that appears to crash almost at random, run the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, shown in Figure 2-16. This tool is specifically designed to detect errors on physical memory. After you activate it, the computer will reboot and perform a series of memory tests. Depending on the amount of RAM and the speed of the processor, this check can take some time. If the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool detects an error, your only recourse is to replace the RAM. Hardware errors in RAM chips cannot be repaired. If you have multiple RAM chips in your computer, it is likely that only one of them has the error. For this reason, once you have determined by running the diagnostic utility that there is a problem with the RAM, you should carefully remove the chips and check them one at a time to determine which of them is faulty. By checking only one stick of RAM at a time, you can determine if all the RAM has errors or if the error is confined to a single chip. When replacing the RAM, you need to ensure that the replacement RAM has identical characteristics, such as RAM frequency. If the replacement RAM does not have identical characteristics, it could cause more problems.

Practice 1: Creating a System Restore Point In this practice, you will manually create a system restore point. After you create the restore point, you will add some Windows Vista components. This practice sets up Practice 2, which will restore Windows Vista to the configuration at the system restore point. 1. Log on to Windows Vista Ultimate using the Kim_Ackers account and the password P@ssw0rd. 2. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then System Restore. 3. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue. 4. On the Restore System Files And Settings page, click Open System Protection. 5. This will open the System Protection tab of the System Properties dialog box, shown in Figure 2-17.

Windows Vista now creates a restore point.
