Orin Thomas As mentioned earlier, LCD monitors look best if run in their native resolution. I have a widescreen LCD monitor attached to one of my computers. Its native resolution is 1680 x 1050. This computer is configured to boot between Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista Ultimate. In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 I can configure the display settings so that the monitor can run in its native resolution. Even though the Windows Vista display adapter driver and monitor drivers have been installed, I cannot configure the display adapter to run in native resolution. After searching the web, I found that the problem is with my display adapter drivers. Other people had encountered the same problem. In testing, they had found that by using a graphics adapter with an alternative chipset, they were able to get the monitor working in its native resolution using Windows Vista. For me, it is a matter of waiting until the vendor of the particular graphics adapter I use gets around to updating its Windows Vista drivers. Interestingly enough, the appropriate drivers became available the day I submitted the first draft of this chapter.

When Windows Vista runs normally, it displays either 16-bit or 32-bit color. Sixteen-bit color means that the monitor displays 65,536 colors, and 32-bit color means that the monitor displays 16,777,216 colors. Almost all modern monitors display 32-bit color, and generally speaking it is better to have your monitor configured to display as many colors as possible. There are some situations in which you might have to switch from 32-bit color to 16-bit color. For example, your monitor might fail, and you cannot afford a new one for a couple of weeks. As an alternative, you have a 10-year-old monitor in the garage that you hook up to your Windows Vista computer. The monitor cannot display very high resolutions and can display only a diminished number of colors, but this will be an acceptable solution until you can acquire a replacement monitor.

Some applications fail when attempting to display more than 256 colors. To deal with these situations, you should configure the application s compatibility settings to run the application only in 256-color mode. Application compatibility settings were covered in more detail in 2, Windows Vista Upgrades and Migrations.

To increase their productivity, people are increasingly connecting more than one monitor to their computers. Many desktop graphics adapters ship with the ability to output two separate signals to monitor devices. Almost all laptop and Tablet PC computers also have the ability to support an ancillary display. For laptop and Tablet PCs, this is generally used to connect directly to a projector device. As far as Windows Vista is concerned, an attached projector is treated as just another display.

Network projectors
Connecting laptop and Tablet PCs to network projectors, which do not connect to graphic adapter display outputs, is covered in more detail in 13, Configuring Mobile Devices.
Although Windows Vista supports as many monitors as you can fit graphics adapters onto your motherboard, this support requires each graphics adapter to use the same chipset and the same Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver. Thus it is possible to have an Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) graphics adapter with two outputs and two further adapters, each with two outputs, in Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slots to run a total of six monitors if, and only if, all three graphics adapters use the same WDDM driver. If your computer has two x16 PCIe slots and your graphics adapters use separate chipsets, Windows Vista will disable one of the graphics adapters even if the same hardware configuration allowed you to use multiple monitors in Windows XP. There are some things you cannot do in Windows Vista that you could do in Windows XP. Occasionally these items turn up in certification exams. The error message displayed when two disparate graphics chipsets are used is shown in Figure 3-10.
