Because remote objects derive from MarshalByRefObject, they are passed by reference from one application domain to another. There is the possibility of passing the object a different way. If the object is marked as serializable, then an exact copy of the object is passed instead. In this case, the process is referred to as marshal-by-value.
Creating a Remote Server Object
The most basic requirement for making an object remote is that it must derive from the MarshalByRefObject class (refer to Table 4-1). Any class can be made remoteable this way, so you can make any of your existing classes remoteable by simply adding this derivation. The following code provides an example of this step:

That is it. You just made the class remoteable by adding that one little piece of code. Simple. Well, that part is. After you make your class remotable, you need to create a hosting application. Recall that the hosting application can be a console application, a Windows application, an ASP.NET application, or a Windows service. After you have created your hosting application, you need to set a reference to both the application containing your remoteable object and the System.Runtime.Remoting namespace. The System.Runtime.Remoting namespace (see Table 4-2) contains the RemotingConfiguration and RemotingServices classes, which are needed to configure and execute your remote server application. You then need to reference certain key namespaces in the hosting application by using code such as the following:
