When your application contains frequently updated information and you want to make that information available to users on the Web, one of the best ways to publish current data is to use a dynamic Active Server Page. Access provides tools to export data to an Active Server Page, and you can use the same formatting tools that you learned about previously in this chapter. However, setting up an Active Server Page to work correctly isn t simply a matter of copying the page to your Web server. Remember from Figure 25-6 on page 974 that an Active Server Page runs on the Web server and fetches the current data from your database on the server. Your Web server must be able to connect to your database, so the Active Server Page must have the correct connection information to enable the server to find your database. Additional requirements to run an Active Server Page are as follows:

The Web page must reside in a folder identified to the Web server as executable. The

The Web page must have a file name extension of .asp this notifies the Web server
root folder of an IIS Web (usually C:\InetPub\wwwroot) on your local machine is marked executable when you install IIS. When you publish a Web page from Microsoft FrontPage, FrontPage marks the folder executable.
The Web server must have Microsoft Access Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) drivers
that correspond to the version of Access used to create the database, or the drivers for the correct version of SQL Server if you re publishing data from an Access project file. If you re using the Web server on a machine where you have Office 2003 installed (your machine is both the Web client and server), you have the correct drivers installed.
Defining a System Data Source
The export to Active Server Page feature in Access requires that you create a data source name (DSN) definition on the server that points to your database. To work properly, the DSN must be a system DSN one that can be used by operating system services. If you plan to publish your Active Server Page on a Web server running on another machine, you must create a system DSN on that machine that connects to your database. Note A system DSN is an entry in your computer s registry, so you won t find a sample file that you can install to create the DSN. You must follow the steps shown here to create the system DSN in order to perform the exercises in this section and open the sample Active Server Pages. To create a system DSN, you must open the ODBC Data Source Administrator. Open Windows Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Data

In the list of drivers, find either the Microsoft Access Driver (for a desktop database) or the SQL Server driver (for a project file) in the list, click it to select it, and click Finish. (Can you tell that I have foreign language support installed on my machine ) When you choose Microsoft Access Driver, the Data Source Administrator shows you the ODBC Microsoft Access Setup dialog box.

Creating Static and Dynamic Web Pages The sample Active Server Pages for the Housing Reservations database use a data source name called Housing. Type Housing in the Data Source Name box, and then type something to help you identify the purpose of the DSN in the Description box. Then click the Select button and find the Housing.mdb sample database in the Select Database dialog box that appears. After you point to the database and click OK, you return to the ODBC Microsoft Access Setup dialog box, which should now look like Figure 26-17.
