Working with XML and SharePoint To give you a sense of the power and ease of using Web Parts, I took about five minutes to customize my test site, including adding a logo, applying a theme, inserting a live weather report on my home town, creating a link to my company home page, and posting an announcement about the publication of this book. You can see the result in Figure 28-16.

I certainly could have had a lot more fun clicking the Create, Site Settings, and Modify My Page links to customize my test SharePoint site, but my focus was on discovering the ways to use SharePoint with Microsoft Access. The remainder of this chapter shows you how you can store some of your application tables on a SharePoint server and import or link to tables (called lists in SharePoint) managed by SharePoint.

As noted earlier in the sections discussing XML, you can import and export XML files from Access, but you cannot link to them. Although SharePoint uses XML technology to store its lists, you can, in fact, link a SharePoint list into Access as a table that you can use in your Access desktop application. The following sections show you how to perform all three tasks from an Access desktop database import, export, and link.

You can actually store your Access data on a SharePoint server and then link it back into your desktop application. Before you can do that, you must export the table to SharePoint. Open the database containing the table you want to export (for this example, the Housing Reservations database Housing.mdb), and select in the Database window the table you want to export. In 1121

In the Site box, you must enter the Web address of your SharePoint team site. You can change the name of the list to be stored on your SharePoint server (the default is the name of the table), and you can enter a description (the wizard fetches the Description property of the table for you). You can also ask the wizard to go to your SharePoint team site and open the list after the export completes. In this example, I changed the list name to Departments and clicked Finish to export the table. Note If you point to a Web address that isn t a SharePoint team site, you ll receive an error when you click Finish. If you re not currently logged on to your SharePoint team site, you ll see a standard Web site login dialog box where you must enter your user name and password and click OK. When the export wizard finishes, it opens a dialog box to let you know it s done click OK to dismiss the dialog box. If you selected the Open the list when finished option, you ll see your exported list on your team site as shown in Figure 28-18.
