network administrator has set up an install package for you on a server. When you perform a local installation, you might need up to 2 gigabytes (GB) during a full installation on your primary hard drive for the installation files and programs. At the end of the Office install, you have the option to leave some of the installation files on your hard drive, which requires up to an additional 240 MB of free space. You need an additional 44 MB of space to install MSDE.

Installing Microsoft Office
Before you run the Office Setup program, be sure that no other applications are running on your computer and then start Windows. If you re installing from the Microsoft Office Professional CD-ROM, insert the first CD-ROM. On most systems, Office Setup starts automatically. If Setup does not start automatically, choose the Run command from the Windows Start menu. In the Run dialog box, type x:\setup.exe (where x is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). To install from a network drive, use Windows Explorer to connect to the folder in which your system manager has placed the Office setup files. Run Setup.exe in that folder by double-clicking it. If you re installing Office from a Master License Pack, choose Run from your Start menu and include a PIDKEY = parameter and the 25-character volume-license key in the Open box, as in:
x:\setup.exe PIDKEY=1234567890123456789012345
Note that the setup program might take several minutes after it displays its opening screen to examine your machine and determine what programs you currently have installed be patient! If you didn t supply a license key on the command line, the setup program first asks for a valid product key. If you re installing from a CD, you can find the product key in the materials included with the Office 2003 installation CDs. Enter a valid key and click Next to go to the next screen. The setup program asks for your name and your company name. Then click Next, and Setup requires that you accept the license agreement. Click Next again, and the setup program shows you different options depending on whether you have programs from a previous version of Office installed on your machine.
Choosing Options When You Have No Previous Version of Office
When you have never installed any previous version of Microsoft Office on your machine (or you have deleted all previous versions), the setup program displays an initial set of options as shown in Figure A-1. At the bottom of the window, you can see the Install to box with a default location chosen. You can enter a different program file location or click the Browse button to select a location on your hard drive. I recommend that you keep the default location. The fastest way to complete an install is to select Typical Install and click Next. You ll see a Summary screen confirming the products that the setup program will install and how much space is required and available on your hard drive. You can click Install to finish the installation.
Part 1: Part Title
Installing Microsoft Office The Typical Install option includes components that Microsoft considers most useful to the majority of users. You can see in Figure A-1 that you can also select Complete Install, Minimal Install, or Custom Install. The Complete Install option installs every available Windows component to your hard drive. The Minimal Install option includes only the basic parts of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and InfoPath, but does not include any of Microsoft Access! (The installation program creates a shortcut to Access, but you ll be prompted to install it when you click the shortcut.) If you don t want to tailor the installation to your specific needs by choosing Custom Install, you can select Typical Install or Complete Install to include Access so that you can work through this book. Click Next, and the setup program displays the Summary window, as shown in Figure A-4 on page 1227.
