When you select this option, you must enclose all string and date/time literals in single quotes in any command that you execute via this connection. Some products, such as Access and the Microsoft Query utility for Microsoft Excel, will generate errors if you do not select this option. The wizard selects this option by default.

ANSI_NULLS requires that you use the ANSI tests for Null (IS NULL, IS NOT NULL) in predicates instead of the = Null syntax of Transact-SQL. ANSI_PADDINGS specifies that trailing blanks in varchar columns and trailing zeroes in varbinary columns are not trimmed before saving the value. 1240

configuration, so unless your SQL Server administrator has instructed you differently, click Finish to bypass them. For more information on the settings, click the Help button.
11 Next, ODBC displays the informational screen shown in the background of Figure A16. Clicking the Test Data Source button causes ODBC to attempt to connect to the database using the settings you specified. If you see the message TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY, your System DSN is ready to use. If you don t see the confirmation message, recheck your entries and perhaps consult your SQL Server administrator.

Converting from a Previous Release of Microsoft Access
Microsoft Office Access 2003 (version 11 of Access) can work with the data and tables in a database file created by Access version 2, version 7 (Access for Windows 95) version 8 (Access 97), version 9 (Access 2000), and version 10 (Access 2002). Depending on the complexity of the application, you might be able to open and run a version 2, 7, or 8 database application with version 11, but you won t be able to modify any of the objects in the database. You can open a version 9 or version 10 database with version 11 and modify any of the objects in the database. You can convert a version 2, version 7, or version 8 database file to either the Access 2000 format (version 9) or the Access 2002 2003 format (versions 10 and 11). First, make sure all 1241

Microsoft Office Access 2003 Inside Out Access Basic or VBA modules are compiled in your earlier version database. For version 2 databases, this means you must open each form and report module individually and compile and save the module. Start Access 2003, and choose Database Utilities from the Tools menu. Choose Convert Database from the submenu and then choose To Access 2000 File Format or To Access 2002 2003 File Format. (Access 2003 also includes a utility to convert a 2000 or 2002 2003 format database back to version 8.) In the Database to Convert From dialog box, select the earlier version file that you want to convert. Access opens the Convert Database Into dialog box. You must specify a different file name or location for your converted database because Access won t let you replace your previous version file directly. Note In order to convert a version 2 database to Access 2000 or 2002 2003 format, you must install additional software. You can download the additional software from the Office Updates Web site. Open Microsoft Access and choose Check for Updates from the Help menu. If you open a version 2, 7, or 8 database in Access 2003, you will see a dialog box offering to convert the database to the current version or attempt to modify the database for shared use between versions. For these versions, I recommend that you attempt to convert them rather than modify them for shared use. You can also convert an earlier version database by creating a new Access 2000 or 2002 2003 format database and then importing all the objects from the older version database.
