When a server stops responding entirely, a remote-management medium that can func tion without the operating system is necessary. A service processor and a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) adapter can provide this functionality. A service proces sor operates independently of the processors in the computer and can offer simple tel net style consoles or Web-based components. Service processors provide connections via out-of-band ports, which can be serial ports, usb ports, Ethernet ports, or modem connections. Service processors can be used to provide out-of-band administration for both normal administration and administration that requires EMS. Another name for a service processor is application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).

Note An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is not a service processor or a remote manage ment system, but it can provide simple remote management capabilities such as shutting down the server or restarting it. It can also be used as a gateway to a management system that is, a serial cable links the computer to the UPS, and another serial port on the UPS is used to connect to the management systems.
EMS Components
EMS components include:

Designing Security for Network Management
Two unique remote-management command-line consoles. The EMS consoles are Special Administration Console (SAC) and !Special Administration Console (!SAC). They provide command-line support and can be accessed through an out-of-band remote management port using terminal software that supports VT-UTF8, VT100+, or VT100. SAC and !SAC are command-line consoles that are different than the Windows Server 2003 command-line environment. A comparison of SAC and !SAC is provided in Table 4-1.

Considerations for Securing EMS
A security standard for terminal concentrators does not exist. Often security consists of a password in the clear logon to telnet. In addition to any provided security features, other things to consider include:
Placing the networked device on a separate management network. The benefits of doing this include the following:
It provides remote access or VPN connection to secure the communications. If access to the networked device is limited, there is less danger of it being misused. Protecting communications with a VPN is always a good idea.
Using a router to filter traffic that is permitted to go to the terminal concentrator. Do not allow traffic that does not originate from a management console to reach the terminal concentrator. Requiring and using a service processor that provides management software that can be secured. Service processors often require the use of specific software for access to the computer. Investigate the security features provided by this software before purchase. Insist on secure procedures.
