Implementing a security update infrastructure is a crucial part of any network security design. To make this happen, you must be able to not only identify what must be updated and how to do so, but you must also realize that there can be many processes involved and that you might need to use more than one process. This lesson provides the overall context and explicit instructions for using Microsoft Software Update Ser vices as a primary component of a security update infrastructure. To design a security update infrastructure, follow this process: 1. Determine the changes that require security updating, and document how to find this information. 2. Determine the methods for updating systems. 3. Select the best combination of update methods.

update processes are the ways in which the changes can be made. Security patches,
software that might be necessary to mitigate an impending attack, are only one part of
the process. Security-related changes are as follows:
Configuration changes to local and Active Directory Group Policy
Configuration changes related to software not managed by Group Policy
Routine software updates such as service packs (SPs)
Engineering fixes provided by Microsoft in response to a specific customer need
Security patches that mitigate a new vulnerability
Methods for Updating Systems
After you know what needs to be updated, you must learn how to do so. There are many ways to update systems. Most solutions cannot do the entire job. For example, Microsoft Software Update Services (SUS) Server is an excellent, automated approach to security patch deployment, but it cannot be used to change security configuration. And the Security Configuration and Analysis tool, which can be used to change security configuration, cannot be used to install software updates. Table 5-1 lists the methods for updating systems and answers questions about the types of updates that can be used to update systems.

Guidelines for Choosing the Best Combination of Update Methods
Table 5-1 shows that few methods can be used alone to do all the security updating nec essary. You will have to use one or more methods to change security configuration and a different method for updating computers with security patches. Follow these guidelines to determine the best combination of methods for updating security patches.
Make choices based on number of systems to update. Guidelines for accom plishing this include the following:
In general, Windows Update, which can be used by visiting the Windows Update site, is useful only when a small number of systems perhaps 50 or fewer must be updated. A manual updating procedure is even less scalable. A manual updating pro cess consists of downloading patches and installing them one by one on each computer. It is too labor intensive to be used to update more than a few systems. SUS can be used to update a few to many hundreds of systems. Using a SUS hierarchy will enable updating of many more. SMS can be used to update any number of systems and is generally used only on large networks because of the complexity of installing and maintaining an SMS infrastructure. Other companies products, which are suitable for small and large operations, are available and vary widely in cost and complexity.
