Guidelines for Designing Group Policy Management of SUS Client Operations
No one combination of Group Policy settings will work for all organizations or for all clients in the same organization. In addition, Group Policy provides a unique opportu nity to plan for fault tolerance and redundancy. Follow these guidelines to develop a Group Policy design for SUS clients operations:

Designing a Security Update Infrastructure
Design GPOs for updating clients using SUS:
Consider developing a site GPO whose main function is to identify the local SUS server using the Specify Intranet Microsoft Update Service Location policy. When a site GPO is used, clients that move between sites will download the GPO and point to the SUS server nearest them. Create organizational unit based GPOs to manage all other settings and to point clients to additional SUS servers if a hierarchy exists at the site. Because OU GPOs will take precedence over site GPOs, local clients will use the proper SUS. Consider what will happen to traveling laptops when both site and OU poli cies are in effect. The laptop receives the site policy, but it is overridden by the cached OU policy. To make sure the laptop uses the local site policy, set the site policy to NO OVERRIDE. You can filter the site policy by user groups so that local users continue to use their OU-assigned SUS server location. Use GPOs linked to OUs to set the time for clients to install downloaded patches. Set different times in different OU policies. In this way, patch instal lation can be staggered. (Clients poll the SUS server every 22 hours, minus up to 20 percent for randomization this cannot be adjusted. Clients download and install new patches according to the schedule you set. Randomization of this activity is also advised.) Set a default time in the site GPO. OU-based GPOs will take precedence. Manage traveling laptops that are rarely in the office by linking a GPO to an organizational unit to which the laptop account belongs. Because the laptops might be used across a VPN and might not have an IP address in any site, they will not be affected by the site policy. The GPO policy, however, can provide them with the location of a SUS server to download updates from. When they are returned to the office, if site GPOs are used, they will receive updates from a local SUS server. Consider using client settings in a GPO to determine client update actions. If servers require different settings, different GPOs on different OUs can be used. Create GPOs for OUs that contain servers, to not automatically install downloaded patches. Instead, set them to download patches and notify. This means an administrator will need to manually approve patch installation on a server-by-server basis. Consider how systems that are turned off during their scheduled update time will get updated. By default, these systems will be updated at their next reg ularly scheduled update time. However, this can be changed by creating and setting the registry value RescheduleWaitTime or the Group Policy setting Reschedule Automatic Updates Scheduled Installation.
