SUS can be used to automatically download and distribute security patches for Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003. You cannot add updates, service packs, or drivers to SUS server for deployment to client systems. Audit patch installation by using MBSA.

Designing a Security Update Infrastructure
Questions and Answers
Pg 5-25
Lesson 1 Practice: Documenting Business and Technical Constraints for the SUS Infrastructure Design
1. What are the business constraints for the SUS infrastructure design
The business constraints are:
Resistance to any more control by IT of departmental computers. administrative time.
Money for deploying the infrastructure, including money for servers, test environment, and Failure to recognize the importance of patching or the time used to do so with the current
infrastructure.
Fear of interference with user productivity. Managers have experienced down time in the past because of necessary patching and rebooting.
2. What are the technical constraints for the SUS infrastructure design
The technical constraints include the following:
SUS cannot update all software. SUS does not provide self-auditing or reporting features. At least one SUS server requires Internet connectivity.
Best practices advise against doing anything else on the SUS server that requires additional hardware and server licenses. The SUS software is free, but a licensed Windows 2000 or Win dows Server 2003 server must be used to run it. You will not have the ability to limit some patches to some computers by using a single SUS server.
Pg 5-33
Lesson 2
Practice: Designing GPOs
1. What Group Policy objects will you design Why
Design a site GPO, which points to the local SUS server and contains all other settings, for each location. The Boston and New York GPOs should be configured with NO OVERRIDE so that OU policies cached on visiting user computers will not direct the clients to attempt to use a SUS server across the WAN. For New York and Boston, design an OU GPO that points to their local SUS server for all users. If you do this and users visit a site other than their own, they will receive that site s policy, which will take precedence over their own OU policy; however, if they use a VPN to connect and receive no site policy, they will still have a SUS server to contact for updates. For Paris, design OU GPOs that will point to the production child SUS server for production sys tems, and OU GPOs that will point to the test child SUS server for test systems. The Paris GPO should not be set to NO OVERRIDE so that the OU GPOs will take precedence.

Lesson 3
Practice: Considering the Implications of Using MBSA
1. What would you tell the disputing parties Support your conclusions.
The security administrators are correct that services might be enabled that were disabled in the past to close security vulnerabilities. MBSA does require that scanned systems have File and Print services and Remote Registry services run-ning. Both of these services have been the source of successful attacks on Win-dows computers in the past. They are often on a list of services that security mavens advise administrators to disable. However, the benefits of determining which systems are not being patched might outweigh the risk for many systems. For other critical systems and sensitive systems, these services can be disabled and a manual connection via terminal services can be used to run a local copy of MBSA. The results could then be made a part of the database.

Exercise 1: Choose a SUS Solution
1. Which SUS server installation will provide the best solution for Tailspin Toys Choose the best answer. a. A single SUS server b. A parent and a single child SUS server c. A parent and single child SUS server, with the parent on the corporate network and the child in the research network d. A parent SUS server and a single child SUS server on the corporate network and an independent SUS server on the research network
Option d is the correct answer. Providing a parent and child SUS server on the corporate network allows for some redundancy. Client usage can be split between the two. If one fails, a cli ent of the failed SUS server can be temporarily directed to the other one. The research network needs its own SUS server. There is no network connection to the corporate network. Answers a and b are incorrect because the clients on the research network cannot connect to any SUS server. Answer c is incorrect because the child SUS server cannot connect to its parent to download new patches.
