Use other operating system features to control user access. Administrative tem plates are a powerful feature that can be used to manage users. However, they are not the only feature. If, for example, you want to prevent users from using termi nal services, there are settings in administrative templates that can assist you. However, if no one should use terminal services to connect to specific computers, you should also take the direct step of disabling terminal services, and possibly providing an IPSec policy to block any attempts at using terminal services. Use combinations of operating systems features to gain the maximum control over user access. An example of doing so would be applying the controls described in the previous bullet point.

Use administrative templates to apply restrictions selectively to users. A different policy can be designed for an OU or even, using filtering by groups, for members of specific Windows Groups whose accounts are in the OU. Use both computer configuration and user configuration administrative templates when features are present in both.

In this practice, you will make a list of technical controls that can be used to fulfill a security policy and then expand one control by providing details. Review the security policy and then answer the questions that follow. If you are unable to answer a ques tion, review the lesson materials and try the question again. You can find answers to the questions in the Questions and Answers section at the end of the chapter.

Design Activity: Designing Technical Controls to Manage the Use of Laptop Computers
In this activity, you must use what you learned in all three lessons and apply it to a real-world situation. Read the scenario and then complete the exercise that follows. You can find answers for the exercise in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter.
Scenario
Your company, Contoso, Ltd., has been contacted to present a proposal for assisting Humongous Insurance in designing controls for employees who use laptop computers. As the technical assistant for the sales team, you are asked to provide a top-level design of the technical controls to manage laptop users and a list of specific controls and rec ommended settings that can be added to the proposal. Your job is to provide the sales team with solid information and recommendations for the things to tell Humongous Insurance in the proposal, but the sales team will decide what and how much to include in the proposal. Your preliminary design a list of steps to take must be ready for the team meeting tomorrow. You and the sales team have been allowed to conduct preliminary interviews and have gathered the following information.
Company Background
Humongous Insurance is a large national insurance company with multiple locations.
Existing Environment
Many employees spend part of their time at the office and part of their time traveling. Some employees work almost entirely from their homes or from various locations while they are traveling. All employees that must travel are issued company laptops with all the software necessary to do their jobs. Laptops are running either Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional. Microsoft Office is installed on all laptops, as are personal firewalls and antivirus software. GPOs that contain restrictive administrative template settings are linked to OUs that contain user and computer accounts. There are some OUs that contain computer accounts for both laptops and desktops. All laptop computers are members of a Windows Server 2003 domain.
