A certificate revocation list (CRL) is a list of certificates that have been revoked along with the reason they were revoked. Certificates are issued with a predetermined valid ity period (the length of time for which they can be used). However, a certificate can be revoked if it should no longer be accepted and has not yet reached its expiration date. Reasons for revocation might be suspicion or knowledge of certificate compro mise, an employee leaves the company, and so on. A CRL can therefore be used as one step in the process used to determine whether a certificate is valid.

A certificate policy statement (CPS) is a formal document that specifies how the PKI will be operated and managed. It is, as the American Bar Association states, A state ment of the practices which a certification authority employs in issuing certificates. The CPS might include information such as:

framework for certificate policy writing. This RFC is a good source of information on items that might be covered in a certificate policy definition or certificate practice state ment, and it provides sample statements that might be used in developing a CPS. In addition to including statements about the overall management of the PKI, the CPS should outline, for each certificate, a certificate practice policy statement that states information such as:

How users are authenticated to the CA The intended purpose of the certificate Requirements for certificate enrollment and renewal Maximum length for public key and private key pairs Legal issues that might arise if the CA is compromised Legal issues that might occur if the certificate is not used as intended Private key management, such as archiving details, export processes, or require ments that smart cards or other hardware devices be used Obligations of users of the certificates, such as what to do if keys are lost, damaged, or compromised
Although the CPS is a formal written document, in Windows Server 2003, the CAPol icy.inf file can be used to document certificate policy statements. This file must be cop ied to the system directory of the CA before the CA is installed or renewed.
For more information about the CAPolicy.inf file, see the Distributed Services Guide of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit and the Resource Kit page of the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/reskit.

Practice: Using Certificates for Authentication and Authorization
In this practice, you will explore uses for certificates in authentication and authoriza tion. If you are unable to answer a question, review the lesson materials and try the question again. You can find answers to the questions in the Questions and Answers section at the end of this chapter.
Exercise 1: Investigating Authentication and Authorization Certificate Usage
Read the following articles in the Windows Server 2003 Help documentation:
Authentication Methods: Internet Protocol security Authentication and Smart Card Support Encrypting and Decrypting Data
Lesson 1
Building a Logical Security Infrastructure by Using Certificate Services
2-13
After you ve finished reading the articles, answer the following questions: 1. When designing an IPSec policy, when would you use one authentication strategy above another
2. You must create an authentication design in which smart card usage is required. What authentication choices are available, and which would you pick for your design
