Description The number of object property values containing DNs sent to outbound replication partners. DN values, such as group or distribution list memberships, are more expen sive to read than other kinds of values because group or distribution list objects can include hundreds and thousands of members and therefore are much bigger than a simple object with only one or two attributes. The number of object property values sent to outbound replication partners per second. The number of directory synchronizations that are queued for this server but not yet processed. This helps in determining replication backlog; the larger the number, the larger the backlog. The number of synchronization requests made to replica tion partners. The number of directory reads per second. The number of directory writes per second. The number of Security Descriptor Propagation subopera tions per second. One Security Descriptor Propagation operation is made up of many suboperations. A suboper ation roughly corresponds to an object the propagation causes the propagator to examine. The number of Security Descriptor Propagation events that are queued but not yet processed. The current number of threads in use by the directory ser vice (different than the number of threads in the directory service process). Threads in Use is the number of threads currently servicing client application programming interface (API) calls and can be used to indicate whether addi tional processors can be of benefit. The number of times per second that clients use a ticket to this domain controller to authenticate to this domain controller. The time (in milliseconds) taken for the last successful LDAP binding. The number of connected LDAP client sessions.

Counter LDAP Searches/Sec LDAP Successful Binds/Sec NTLM Authentications
Description The number of search operations per second performed by LDAP clients. The number of successful LDAP binds per second. The number of Windows NT LAN Manager (NTLM) authentications per second serviced by this domain controller.
To monitor FRS, you monitor the activity of the FileReplicaConn and FileReplicaSet performance objects. The FileReplicaConn performance object shows performance sta tistics for the Replicaconn object that defines replica connections to Distributed File System (DFS) roots. The FileReplicaSet performance object shows performance statis tics for the Replicaset object that defines a replica set. The counters for these objects are available for each replica set managed by FRS while the service is running. Impor tant FileReplicaSet counters that you can monitor to verify FRS performance are listed in Table 14-2.
Table 14-2
Important FileReplicaSet Counters
Description Number of change notifications received from inbound partners. Number of change notifications sent out to outbound partners. Number of replicated files installed locally. Amount of free space in the staging directory used by FRS to temporarily store files before they are replicated. The default staging space is 660 MB. Amount of space in the staging directory currently in use. If the staging directory runs out of space, replication stops. Number of FRS data or control packets (RPC calls) received by FRS. Number of FRS data and control packets sent to all outbound partners associated with this replica set member. Number of records that are accepted for replication. Replica tion is triggered by entries written to the NTFS change journal. FRS reads each file close record from the journal and determines whether to replicate the file. An accepted record gener ates a change order, which is then sent out. A high value on this counter (about one every five seconds) indicates a lot of replication traffic. This can cause replication latency.
