Using and Customizing Windows Media Player supports playback in Windows Media Player. Most DVD drives sold as retail upgrades also include a software decoder. If you installed Windows XP on an older computer, however, you might need to purchase, download, and install a decoder from the Internet. If this is the case, the first time you insert a DVD disc in your drive, the Player will display an error message with a link to its DVD Troubleshooter. Follow this link and you ll find a list of compatible decoders. After all the requisite hardware and software is in place, playing a DVD movie in Windows Media Player is as transparently simple as playing an audio CD. If Windows Media Player is the AutoPlay application for DVD movies, it will start automatically and begin playing your movie. If it isn t, start Windows Media Player yourself. Then click Play, DVD Or CD Audio. In the submenu that appears, choose your DVD drive. While your movie is playing, its chapters appear in the Playlist section of Now Playing. This chapter list provides one means of navigation within the movie you can jump to a particular chapter by double-clicking it in Now Playing. You can also get to the movie s own menu screen by clicking the Menu button near the lower left corner of Now Playing. Playback controls appear at the bottom of Now Playing. You can use these to play or pause your movie, to fast-forward or rewind, or to adjust the volume. To jump to the DVD menu (which typically includes options for choosing the language of the soundtrack, adjusting audio settings, and showing subtitles), click the DVD icon at the bottom of the Now Playing screen, just above the playback controls, or choose View, DVD Features. You can also adjust the soundtrack and subtitles from the Play menu, by choosing Audio And Language Tracks or Captions And Subtitles. To fully appreciate a DVD movie, you probably don t want to see any part of the Player except the portion that shows the movie itself. You can display the movie full screen by choosing View, Full Screen; pressing Alt+Enter; or clicking the View Full Screen button. In full-screen mode, the Player s playback controls appear temporarily in a bar along the bottom of your screen. Information about the movie you re watching, as well as the chapter list, briefly appear on the right side of the screen (if this list isn t visible, click the Show Playlist button). All of these controls normally fade from view after about three seconds and reappear whenever you move the mouse. To lock them into position, click the pushpin in the bar along the top of the screen. While you re watching the movie on the full screen, you can also rightclick at any time to get to the DVD Features menu. To return to the Player s normal windowed presentation, press Alt+Enter or Esc. Or rightclick and choose Exit Full Screen.

Windows Media Player is designed to deal gracefully with media files that are licensed using Microsoft s Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology that is, digital content whose use is governed by a licensing agreement with the content provider. The license associated with a file, which protects the provider against illegal distribution of the media item, specifies how you can use the file and for what period of time. Licensed files are encrypted using digital signatures. The terms of the license are determined by the content vendor; Windows Media Player enforces the terms of that license agreement. Note Windows Media DRM is one of several licensing schemes available for digital media. If you acquire files from a source that uses an alternative DRM technology, you will be unable to play those clips in Windows Media Player. Check with the supplier of the licensed content to see which media player supports the DRM scheme used in that content. When you download a media item a song or a movie clip, for instance from the Internet, the content provider might provide you with a license. Alternatively, if you play an unlicensed file that requires a license, the Player tries to obtain the license. You might have to register or pay for the license at this time. Tip If you want to avoid acquiring licensed media, choose Tools, Options. On the Privacy tab in the Options dialog box, clear Acquire Licenses Automatically For Protected Content. Windows Media DRM licenses may be for an indefinite period of time or may expire after some period of time. In some cases, a license will allow you to play the media item only on the computer on which the item was obtained. In other cases, a license allows you to copy or move the item to other computers (but not necessarily to CDs). If the protected content originated on a CD (that is, if you copied protected content from a CD to your hard disk), you typically are permitted to copy the content onto another CD but not to other computers. Copying to SDMI-compliant portable devices is typically restricted by the same terms that apply to the use of the item on the computer where it was downloaded. (SDMI stands for Secure Digital Music Initiative, a forum that seeks to establish technology specifications for protecting the property rights of digital content providers. For more information, see the forum s Web site at http://www.sdmi.org.) You can read the terms of an item s license by examining the item s properties dialog box. Locate the file in Windows Media Player or in Windows Explorer (usually you ll find it in My Music), right-click it, choose Properties from the shortcut menu, and click the License tab. Figure 19-15 shows the License tab for a downloaded music file. Alternatively, if the file is included in the Player s media library, you can right-click it there, choose Properties, and click the License Information tab. The same information appears in both places.
