If you have bought licenses that allow you to play the items for an indefinite period of time on your own computer, that doesn t mean you can never move the media items to another computer. You can move them (giving up your privileges on the current computer, of course), but only if you have backed up your licenses. When you move the media to a new computer, you restore the licenses on the new computer. Note Microsoft allows you to restore your licenses on a maximum of four unique computers. Note that if you reformat your hard disk and reinstall Windows XP Microsoft considers , the new installation to be a new unique computer.

Restoring sends to Microsoft a globally unique identifier (GUID) that enables Microsoft to track how many times you restore your licenses. The company does this to discourage illicit replication of licensed files. (To read more about what information about your computer Windows Media Player might send over the Internet, click Learn More.)
3 Click OK.

Windows Media Player works with all sorts of media, but it s especially well-suited for the task of managing digital music files. Using nothing but the Player window, you can download songs from the Internet, copy tracks from CDs, edit song titles and other information stored within files, create custom playlists, copy music to portable devices, and burn custom CDs. (In fact, the same tools you use to manage a music library work with video clips and recorded TV broadcasts as well. We cover those other types of media in this chapter, but our emphasis is on music files.) In this chapter, we look at how to use Windows Media Player to handle all of these tasks. As in 19, we assume that you have upgraded to Windows Media Player 10, which represents a major upgrade over previous versions. Our coverage is based on a preview version of Windows Media Player 10; if you re using the final release of this program, or a subsequent upgrade, you may find that some features are different from the descriptions in this chapter, although the basic principles are the same.
