Windows Media Player s Media Library feature displays your collection of media files in a single outlined list, where everything is easy to relocate and replay. Related items in Media Library are automatically gathered into playlists, and you can create additional custom playlists of your favorite tracks. As Figure 20-7 shows, Media Library uses two panes to display your collection in a view that works much like Windows Explorer. The Contents pane on the left is an outline, and the Details pane at right shows what s included in the current selection in the Contents pane. (If the Playlist pane is visible, it appears to the right of the Details pane.) Where is all this information stored As we noted at the beginning of this chapter, the entire Media Library is stored in a single database file. This file, which is not directly editable using any tool except Windows Media Player, contains information about DVDs you ve watched and CDs you ve played, as well as details about music and video files you ve added to your library, whether by recording them from CD or TV, importing previously recorded files, or purchasing tracks from an online service. In addition, the Media Library database contains custom playlists you ve created and ratings you ve assigned to individual tracks.

Clean up the database Although you can t edit the Media Library database, you can clean it up easily if it becomes corrupted (or if you simply want to get a fresh start). After closing Windows Media Player, open Windows Explorer and browse to the hidden folder %UserProfile%\ Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player. Rename the database file, CurrentDatabase_130.wmdb. Then reopen Windows Media Player and use the Search facility to import music and other media files stored on your computer (see the following section, Adding Items to Your Media Library, for more details). This step erases the stored details (including customizations) of any CDs and DVDs you ve played but have not added to the Library; you ll need to download these details again for each CD in your collection. It also wipes out the star ratings and play counts for any tracks in your library.

As you have seen, if you copy CDs to your hard disk, those copies automatically become part of your Media Library. Windows Media Player creates entries in the audio section of your library for album titles, artist names, song titles, and musical genres. Adding tracks by copying CDs is, however, only one of several ways to build your library.

Adding Items Automatically
By default, Windows Media Player monitors your My Music and My Videos folders. Any compatible files you add to these locations are automatically added to the Library without any intervention on your part. You can have Media Player check other folders, too for instance, if you subscribe to an online music service and your purchased tracks are stored in a subfolder that is not in My Music, consider adding that location to the list of monitored folders. Choose Options from the Tools menu, click the Library tab, and then click Monitor Folders. Click Add to browse for folders to make the list longer. Click Remove to clear entries from the list. If you prefer to have complete control over which items get added to your Library, you can disable monitoring by removing all folders from the list.

Caution
Heed the warning at the bottom of this dialog box and avoid monitoring shared network folders or the root folder of any drive. We can personally attest that either of these configurations can have adverse effects on the response of Windows Media Player. The dialog box also warns against monitoring a large number of folders. That s probably good advice, but note that we ve had no problems monitoring locations that contain close to 1000 folders; if you have a larger music collection than we do, you may want to consider turning off Monitor Folders and managing your music manually.
