Speed up file syncs Each time you sync with a portable player whose quality settings are lower than those of your music library, Windows Media Player transcodes those tracks converting them to the lower bit rate in a temporary folder before copying them to the device itself. If you have ample space on your primary hard disk, you can speed up this process by allowing more room for the Transcoded Files Cache and configuring Windows Media Player to perform this operation in the background. To find these options, open the Options dialog box and click Advanced on the Devices tab. Transcoded files are stored in the default location (in your profile). Buttons in this dialog box let you move the cache to another folder or even another drive, and to delete the files for space-saving purposes.

Custom playlist or priority synchronization
Manual or automatic synchronization With the Manual option, you connect your device, confirm that the synchronization details are correct, and then click the Sync button. With the Automatic option, synchronization begins as soon as you connect your device, using the current sync settings. You can designate one or more playlists for Windows Media Player to use when synchronizing, or you can allow the program to use its built-in list or priorities to choose music for you.
Custom playlist or priority syncronization
If you entrust Windows Media Player with the responsibility to build that list, it uses a set of built-in rules to try to guess which tracks are your favorites. For music, its top priorities are as follows, in order:
Any playlists you have created Music auto-rated at 5 stars Music added in the last month Music rated at 4 or 5 stars Music played in the last month
Part 5: Mastering Digital Media
Managing a Digital Music Collection In addition, if your device supports pictures, TV, and video files, those file types will be added, but their priority is much lower on the list. To adjust these settings afterwards, click the Display Properties And Settings button on the Sync tab, just above the Sync List pane, or open the Options dialog box, select the connected device, and click Properties. Click Settings in the properties dialog box to display the Synchronization Settings dialog box shown here.

In this example, we ve created a custom playlist called Ed s Newest Tracks and defined it as the only playlist to be used when synchronizing. By managing that single playlist, we can control which tracks appear on the device without worrying about the built-in rules or having to assign ratings. Tip What if you don t own a compatible device If your portable player isn t on the list of supported portable players, you ll need to find an alternate strategy for filling it with music. Most devices include some sort of software designed to help with this task. For hard disk-based devices, we recommend an all-purpose utility called FileSync (available from http://www.fileware.com). You can specify settings by file or folder, filter out certain types of files (so that album art doesn t waste disk space on your device, for instance), and save settings for reuse. It s useful for many other types of tasks as well.
