Organizing and Editing Images imaging devices. For Windows programs that are only compatible with devices that use the older TWAIN standard, WIA provides a compatibility layer that allows you to capture and transfer images without having to install extra software. When Windows makes a WIA device available through the TWAIN compatibility layer, its device name includes WIA- as a prefix. The TWAIN compatibility layer isn t perfect; for instance, it supports only the BMP (Windows Bitmap) file format and doesn t allow you to use the automatic document feeders found on many high-end flatbed scanners. With older devices that do not have WIA drivers and communicate with Windows via a serial port, you ll be unable to take advantage of any image-handling features found in Windows XP. These devices typically hook into Windows using proprietary interfaces; any such device won t show up in the Scanners And Cameras folder and won t be available for use with Windows XP wizards. In some cases, you may have to choose between the software and drivers that came with your device and the WIA-based features in Windows XP. If the manufacturer s software includes device-specific features, such as the ability to program buttons on a scanner or to access configuration options in a camera, it may be your best choice. When you choose this option, you ll lose the ability to work with the device through the Scanner And Camera Wizard, but for some devices the trade-off may be worth it. Tip Use System Restore before experimenting It s impractical to switch between the WIA-based imaging features in Windows XP and those found in a device manufacturer s proprietary software. If your device works when you plug it into a Windows XP system but you want to experiment with the manufacturer s software to decide whether its features are a better fit for you, be sure to set a System Restore checkpoint before installing the software and drivers. If you decide you prefer the WIA-based tools, uninstall the software package and then use System Restore to remove the manufacturer s drivers and restore your system to its previous configuration. For full details, see Undoing Configuration Mistakes with System Restore, page 1132. Finally, if the built-in picture-handling capabilities of Windows XP don t do everything you want, you have the option to use a full-featured image-management program instead. One of our favorites is Picasa. It makes short work of transferring pictures from camera to computer, performing simple edits such as red-eye removal, organizing photos into collections, categorizing and tagging images for easy retrieval, and sharing photos online. Picasa is available at http://www.picasa.com.
