When you capture an image with a digital camera, the camera settings define the file format used. As a result, when you transfer images, you re not given a choice of formats. But when you scan a document, the final step of the Scanner And Camera Wizard involves the dialog box shown in Figure 21-5. The name and location fields are self-explanatory, but choosing the right file format isn t always so easy.

graphic Experts Group (JPEG) format. Because it is highly compressible, this is one of two popular formats used for Web graphics. (The other is Graphics Interchange Format, or GIF.) It s an excellent choice if the scanned image is destined for use on the Web. However, the compression used to create JPEG files results in a permanent loss of detail. If you want to preserve as much detail as possible, choose a different format.
TIF is the three-letter extension for the Tag (or Tagged) Image File Format (TIFF),
which is compatible with a large number of software applications. Although TIFF files can be compressed, the compression does not result in a loss of detail; of course, the trade-off is that TIFF files are generally larger than GIF or JPEG files. This is the best choice for graphics that will be used in desktop publishing programs. It s also the default format for faxes received through the Windows XP Fax Service. When scanning multiple pages using an automatic document feeder, choose this format to save the files in multipage TIFF format, in which all pages are merged into a single file.

highly compressible, and safe for use on Web pages because it s supported by virtually all modern browsers. Although some experts predict it will someday replace GIF, as of this writing it is still not widely used. The PNG filter used in Windows XP tends to produce relatively large images with no loss of detail. Note
Previous versions of Windows included a useful image viewing and editing tool called Kodak Imaging. This tool is no longer available in a clean installation of Windows XP , although it is preserved if you upgrade from Windows 98, Windows Me, or Windows 2000. You ll sorely miss Kodak Imaging if you routinely work with multipage TIFF files, because the Windows XP Picture And Fax Viewer doesn t offer any way to add, delete, or rearrange individual pages in such a file. If you need this capability on a regular basis, you ll need to adopt an appropriate image-editing utility. Microsoft Office XP and Office 2003 include the excellent Microsoft Office Document Imaging utility. If you re not an Office user, consider the feature-rich, easy-to-use IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com).
Need to convert a graphics file after saving it to your hard disk Open Microsoft Paint (click the Start button, choose All Programs, Accessories, and click Paint). Unlike the noticeably underpowered Paint utility in Windows 95/98/Me, which could only work with BMP files, the Windows XP version is surprisingly robust. It still works with BMPs, of course, but you can also open and save picture files in JPEG, GIF, TIFF, and PNG formats. (You cannot, however, choose custom options such as compression levels for any of these formats.)
