turned on to allow other computers to communicate across the virtual network. If you shut down that computer, you also shut down the bridge. In versions of Windows XP before Service Pack 2, the Network Setup Wizard attempted to bridge connections automatically when it detected two or more available connections. This capability all too often bridged multiple connections inappropriately; as a result, a change in Service Pack 2 blocks the Network Setup Wizard from bridging connections automatically. To create a bridge manually, select the first connection, hold down Ctrl, and then select the second connection. Right-click and choose Bridge Connections from the shortcut menu. After you create the bridge, a new device, Network Bridge, appears in the Network Connections folder, as shown here.

Tweaking and Troubleshooting a Small Network After you create the bridge, the settings for each individual connection are no longer available. To view details of your network configuration, double-click the Network Bridge icon and click the Support tab on the Network Bridge Status dialog box. To change details of the bridged connection, right-click the Network Bridge icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. The resulting dialog box, shown in Figure 24-3, lets you adjust configuration details for individual adapters or configure IP settings for the bridged connection.

You can have only one network bridge on a single computer, although you can, in theory, have as many as 68 network adapters joined in a bridge. To add or remove network adapters from the bridge, right-click the connection icon in the Network Connections window and choose Add To Bridge or Remove From Bridge. If you decide you no longer want to use the network bridge, you can remove it by right-clicking the Network Bridge icon and choosing Delete from the shortcut menu.

By sharing your computer s resources, such as its folders and printers, you let other people on your network use these resources. With Microsoft Windows XP, using network resources and sharing your own resources with other network users is almost as simple and straightforward as using your own computer s resources. Browsing a network folder is just like browsing a folder on your own hard disk. Sending a document to a network printer is just like printing at your own computer.
