A folder s properties dialog box doesn t have a Sharing tab. If the folder s properties dialog box doesn t have a Sharing tab, be sure your system is set up for sharing. First, check the properties dialog box for the network connection, and be sure that File And Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks is installed and selected. (For more information, see Configuring a Default Network Connection, page 864.) Then use the Services tool (right-click My Computer, choose Manage from the shortcut menu, expand Services And Applications, and click Services), and make sure that the Server service is started.

The easiest way to set up sharing is with Simple File Sharing enabled. You can share any drive or any folder except Program Files and Windows. (You can share subfolders of these system folders, however.) To share a folder or drive, follow these steps:

Be aware that sharing a drive shares not just its root folder, but all its subfolders as well; everything on the drive is available. And because Simple File Sharing allows any network user to access your shared resources, this opens the full content of your shared drive to anyone on your network. (If the drive is formatted as an NTFS volume, NTFS permissions might be configured to restrict Guest access to some
Managing Shared Folders and Printers folders, however.) In general, you re better off sharing folders instead of drives; you re exposing fewer of your files to others. However, in certain situations with a CD-ROM drive or a drive dedicated to music files, for example you might want to provide such unlimited access. If that s the case, go ahead and click the link in this dialog box.
3 In the Network Sharing And Security box, on the Sharing tab, select Share This Folder On The Network.

4 Specify a name for the shared resource in the Share Name box. (This is the name that network users see when they browse to your shared folder.) Windows proposes the name of the folder or, for a drive, the volume name and drive letter. Making a change here affects only the name visible on the network; it doesn t change the name of the folder on your computer. 5 If you want to allow network users to create or modify files in your shared folder and its subfolders (subject to the limitation imposed on the Guest account), select Allow Network Users To Change My Files. By default, Windows leaves this check box clear, which means network users can view files and folders in your shared folder but not create or modify them.
When you complete these steps, all network users will be able to find your shared folder in their My Network Places folder (if automatic discovery of network places is disabled, they ll need to browse to the shared folder), view its contents, and unless you cleared the last check box change its contents. Regardless of how they re logged onto their own computer, your computer authenticates network users as if they were using the Guest account. Therefore, within the folders you share over the network, network users have the same privileges as those granted to someone logging on locally as Guest.

Microsoft Windows XP Inside Out, Second Edition Tip Hide a shared folder from casual browsers If you append a dollar sign to the share name (for example, Elopement$), the folder is not visible to users who browse the network with My Network Places or Windows Explorer. Users whom you ve entrusted with the name of your shared folder can still connect to it by typing its name including the dollar sign anywhere network paths are accepted, such as the Address bar, the Add Network Place Wizard, the Map Network Drive dialog box, and so on.
Note, however, that hiding share names that end with a dollar sign is a function of the client computer, not the server. (In this context, server means the computer that has the shared folder.) All versions of Windows hide such shares, but if your network includes Apple Macintosh or Linux computers, users on those computers can view the hidden shares. Therefore, you can t rely on this method to completely secure your sensitive shared data; you must also set permissions appropriately.
