Managing Shared Folders and Printers permissions, this action displays the folder s content in Windows Explorer. It s not always that easy however. If the user account with which you logged on doesn t have permission to view a network computer or resource you select, a dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 25-11 appears. To gain access, you must provide the name of an account (and its password, of course) that has permission. Perhaps the trickiest part of using shared folders is fully understanding what permissions have been applied to a folder and which credentials are in use by each network user. The first rule to recognize is that all network access is controlled by the computer with the shared resources; regardless of what operating system runs on the computer attempting to connect to a network share, it must meet the security requirements of the computer where the resource is shared. The following sections explain how to connect to shared folders on various types of servers. (In this context, server merely denotes the computer where the folder is shared; it might not be a dedicated server.)

Inside Out
Store Your Network Passwords in Windows XP Home Edition Whether you provide a user name and password when Windows requests them or add them directly to the stored network passwords, if you re using Windows XP Professional, Windows saves the credentials so that you need never enter them again to access the same resource. Unfortunately, the same is not true of Windows XP Home Edition. With a little effort, you can work around this limitation of Home Edition, as follows:
Part 6: Networking

1 Use Notepad or another plain text editor to create a batch program (a plain text file
with the file name extension .bat or .cmd).
2 Enter a Net Use command on a separate line in the batch program for each network
resource you want to connect to. The command takes the form net use \\computername\sharename password /user:computername\username, where computername is the name of the sharing computer, username is the name of an account on the sharing computer with access rights to the share, and password is that account s password. For example, to make the connection shown in the figure on the facing page, you d type the following:
net use "\\sequoia\budget data" WhI89dd /user:sequoia\carl
3 Drag a shortcut for the batch program to the Startup group on your Start menu, or set
up a scheduled task so that it runs when you log on. For more information about batch commands and scheduled tasks, see 15, Automating Windows XP For information about the Net Use command, see Net Use, page 943. .
Windows XP Professional with Simple File Sharing Disabled or Windows 2000
In a workgroup environment, this configuration is more secure than Simple File Sharing, as it lets the share owner decide who to let in. Computers joined to a domain always have Simple File Sharing disabled, so this information applies to those computers as well.
Share permissions
By default, Everyone has Full Control. Administrators on the sharing computer can grant or deny permissions to any user or group. By default, a folder inherits the permissions of its parent folder, but administrators on the sharing computer can grant or deny permissions to any user or group.
