It s important to note that only one user at a time can control the desktop of a computer running Windows XP Professional. If someone logs on locally to the remote computer, the remote session is immediately disconnected without warning to the users at either end of the connection. (The good news is that no data is lost when the remote user is disconnected. It works the same as when you switch users with Fast User Switching; the first session remains logged on and all applications continue running, but the new session has control of the desktop.) Particularly with the Welcome screen and Fast User Switching enabled, it s all too easy for this to happen. Someone seeing the Welcome screen on a computer with nobody around might naturally assume that the computer is not being used and is available for his or her use. Therefore, if you use Remote Desktop and other people have physical access to your remote computer while you re connected remotely, you should disable the Welcome screen. At the very least, consider disabling Fast User Switching. Although it doesn t prevent another user from knocking you off, the user who tries to log on locally to the remote computer at least gets a message that explains who is connected remotely and warns that logging on will disconnect the remote user and cause the loss of unsaved data. Whether you disable the Welcome screen and Fast User Switching or not, logging on locally with the same account that s currently connected remotely disconnects the remote user without warning. This is a good reason to create a separate user account for each person in your office or home (and for each person to log on with his or her account only); it s not likely that one person will be in two places at once!

Connecting from a Web Browser

If you set up a Web server on your network, you can connect to a remote desktop without using the Remote Desktop Connection client program; instead, the remote desktop appears in a Web browser window. For details about setting up the Web server for this purpose, see Configuring a Web Server for Use with Remote Desktop Web Connection, page 954. To connect to the remote desktop, you ll need a TCP/IP connection to the network or the Internet, and you must be running Internet Explorer 4 or later. Remote Desktop Web Connection installs an ActiveX control on the client computer. To make the connection, simply type the URL for the Remote Desktop Web Connection home directory in Internet Explorer s Address bar. By default, the URL is http://server/tsweb/, where server is the name or IP address of the server. On an intranet (or if you ve already made a VPN connection to your network), simply use the computer name. If you re connecting over the Internet, the server must have a registered domain name or a known IP address. Internet Explorer then displays a page like the one shown in Figure 26-8.
