The address book shown in Figure 27-6 includes two panes. The left pane contains a Shared Contacts folder for contacts shared between all identities using Outlook Express and a folder containing the current identity s contacts. The current identity s contacts are normally visible only to the current identity. If your system does not display a left pane, choose View, Folders And Groups. The entries in the left pane Shared Contacts and George s Contacts in Figure 27-6 are folders. To organize your contacts more effectively, you can add folders of your own to any existing folder. To add a folder, right-click its parent and choose New, New Folder. To move a contact from one folder to another, select the contact s name in the right pane and then drag it to the appropriate folder in the left pane. To make a personal contact visible to other identities, for example, drag it from the right pane and drop it on the Shared Contacts heading in the left pane.

Earlier versions of Address Book gave you the option of using your Outlook Contacts folder in Outlook Express. If you accepted this option, Address Book became a front end to Outlook, visible in Outlook Express and any other applications that used Address Book. Contacts added via Outlook thus became accessible to Outlook Express, and contacts added to Address Book by means of Outlook Express options (such as Outlook Express s option to add the names of people you reply to via e-mail) became usable in Outlook. This integration with Outlook is still available in Address Book 6 (the version shipped with Windows XP), but only via an undocumented registry edit. To share contact information between Outlook and Address Book, open Registry Editor and go to HKCU\Software\ Microsoft\WAB\WAB4. Add the DWORD value UseOutlook to this key (if it isn t already present), and set it to 1. To return to the unintegrated state, return to this registry value and either delete it or set it to 0. The tradeoff for integration between Outlook and Address Book is that it precludes using identities in Address Book. If you are using Outlook integration and you display the Folders And Groups pane in Address Book, you see the subfolders of your Outlook Contacts folder instead of your shared contacts and personal contacts. (You can still use multiple identities in Outlook Express this limitation affects only the display of information in Address Book.)

Using and Customizing Outlook Express Tip View other identities contacts Address Book normally shows only the current identity s contacts and shared contacts. This is a convenience feature, not a security feature. You can see the contacts of all the identities defined in Outlook Express by starting Address Book from a command line type the command string wab/a. (If Address Book doesn t immediately display identity names in a left pane, choose View, Folders And Groups.) If you don t want other users to see your contacts, don t use identities. Note You cannot copy a contact by holding down Ctrl as you drag. Duplicate entries in Address Book create inefficiency, so the application doesn t encourage copying. (You can copy a contact, however, by right-clicking it, choosing Copy, moving to the destination, rightclicking again, and then choosing Paste.)

To directly add someone to your address book, right-click the folder you want the contact to appear in, and choose New, New Contact. (Alternatively, select the folder and then choose File, New Contact.) A seven-tabbed dialog box appears, in which you can enter as much or as little information as you need. You can also add groups to your address book. When you send mail to a group, Outlook Express parses the group name into its individual member names and sends your message to everyone in the group. To create a group, follow these steps:
