Adding text to a new message is as easy as typing. In a plain text message, no formatting is available. If you use HTML formatting, however, the New Message window displays a formatting toolbar full of rich formatting options. You can choose fonts and point sizes, create bulleted lists, indent paragraphs, and do practically anything else that you might do in a word processor program. The toolbar even includes a style list (see Figure 27-8) that can simplify your formatting tasks.

Outlook Express uses Arial as the default font for all your messages. That means that everyone who uses Outlook Express and accepts the default uses the same font. If you prefer something distinctive, choose Options from the Outlook Express Tools menu. In the Options dialog box, on the Compose tab, click Font Settings and then choose a font. (You can do this separately for mail and news.) It s best to pick a font that most Windows users have. If you select Haettenschweiler Bold (or some other obscure font), recipients who haven t installed your off-the-beaten-track font will see whatever Windows decides to substitute. You can also set the default style, size, and color of the font.

If you re an HTML expert, you can do even more in the way of formatting than the Formatting toolbar allows. You can add animations, scripts, and anything else that you might put on a Web page. To work directly in HTML code, choose View, Source Edit in the New Message window. The tabs that appear along the bottom of the window allow you to switch views while composing your message. The Edit tab provides the same WYSIWYG view as you see when Source Edit view is turned off. The Source tab view shows HTML code along with your text, and the Preview tab attempts to show all elements of your HTML code in action, even some that might not fully display in the Edit window. However, you can t edit in Preview mode.

Using Stationery
Want a colorful background for your e-mail Choose from one of the many stationery selections offered by Outlook Express. If you don t find one to your liking on the numbered list that appears when you click the arrow next to the Create Mail button, choose Select Stationery from that menu. You ll find a larger assortment in the Select Stationery dialog box that appears. You can click Edit to modify an existing stationery choice or click Create New to have the Stationery Setup Wizard help you design your own. A word of caution: Recipients using text-only e-mail clients may see your background as an attached image file. Before settling on a stationery, make certain that your message will be readable in a plain-text format.
Inserting Hyperlinks
To insert a hyperlink into an e-mail message, choose Insert, Hyperlink in the New Message window. The most common use for a hyperlink is to point the recipient of your e-mail message to a Web site of interest. But, as Figure 27-9 shows, you can insert many other kinds of links as well.

By choosing Insert, Hyperlink, you can add links of any sort to your messages.
Inserting Your Signature
A signature is a block of text or graphics that you add to a message. Your signature would normally contain your name and e-mail address and any other information (a favorite quotation, perhaps) that you want to include. To create a signature in Outlook Express, choose Tools, Options, click the Signatures tab, and then click New. In the Edit Signature section of the dialog box, shown in Figure 27-10, type the text of your signature. Alternatively, select the File option and use the Browse button to find a text or HTML file. You can create as many signatures as you want in this manner.
