network conditions. For communications on a local area network or a broadband connection that provides great bandwidth and minimal delay, Messenger uses codecs that provide telephone-like quality. If network throughput decreases or delay increases beyond a certain point, Windows automatically switches to a lower bit rate. When network conditions improve, Windows automatically steps up to a higher quality.

nary microphone and speakers. (Without acoustic echo cancellation, excessive echo can necessitate the use of a headset.) Note that acoustic echo cancellation might not work on some systems. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 295952, The Acoustic Echo Cancellation Technology May Not Work with Various Sound Cards (http://support.microsoft.com/ kbid=295952). Before you make your first audio connection, you should run the Audio And Video Tuning Wizard. It helps you to select a camera, microphone, and speakers (if your computer has more than one of any of these components), and to set speaker and microphone volume. To run the wizard, in the Windows Messenger window, choose Tools, Audio Tuning Wizard. Rerun the wizard whenever you install a new camera, microphone, speakers, or headset. To make an audio connection, you can start with an existing conversation window one in which you re exchanging instant text messages. Simply click Start Talking in the sidebar. (If the sidebar isn t visible, choose Actions, Start Talking.) Or you can initiate a new conversation as a voice call. In the main Windows Messenger window, choose Actions, Start A Voice Conversation.

The recipient sees a similar message and has the choice of accepting or declining your invitation by clicking a link or pressing a shortcut key. When he or she does so, a message notifies both of you about the action. The conversation window remains open regardless of the recipient s response to your invitation. You can continue to send and receive instant messages in the conversation window while you carry out the voice conversation. To end the voice conversation, either close the conversation window (to break off the connection entirely) or click the Stop Talking link in the sidebar (to end the voice conversation only).
Using Your Webcam to Make Video Calls
If your computer has a video camera attached, you can send video as well as audio. Depending on the speed of your connection, the motion may be jerky and you ll get some digital artifacts but the quality can be surprisingly good. And even if the person at the other end of the conversation doesn t have a camera, you can send your picture. Before you make your first video connection, you should run the Audio And Video Tuning Wizard. (In the Windows Messenger window, choose Tools, Audio Tuning Wizard.) The wizard shows an image from your camera, which you can review to be sure that the camera is positioned properly and that the colors look good. If the colors require adjustment, you ll need to use the software that came with your camera to change the settings. The procedure for participating in a video conversation is almost identical to that for holding a voice conversation. Start by opening a conversation window, using any of the techniques described earlier in this chapter. Then click the Start Camera link in the sidebar. (If the sidebar isn t visible, choose Actions, Start Camera.) This link opens the video window as well as
