Why This Matters
When you install an operating system on a computer, the Setup program creates a default configuration that, from a security perspective, might or might not be suitable for your network environment. When designing a new network, you should keep security in mind from the start, and select your hardware and software with support and security capabilities as criteria. When designing a deploy ment plan for your computers, you should create a baseline installation that provides a secure starting point for the final configuration. For the majority of your systems, the baseline configuration should be adequate. For computers with extraordinary security requirements, you can build on the baseline installation by modifying the default configuration settings or by installing additional security hardware and software. Designing a baseline operating system installation is crucial to creating a secure network and smooth-running technical support. As a network administrator, you must understand the security capabilities of the operating systems on your network and be familiar with the default security settings that the installation program creates. You configure many of the security settings discussed in this chapter with tools that network administrators use every day, so the more famil iarity you have with these tools, the better.
