Why This Matters
When you install an operating system on a computer, the Setup program creates a default configuration that, from a security perspective, might or might not be suitable for your network environment. When designing a new network, you should keep security in mind from the start, and select your hardware and software with support and security capabilities as criteria. When designing a deploy ment plan for your computers, you should create a baseline installation that provides a secure starting point for the final configuration. For the majority of your systems, the baseline configuration should be adequate. For computers with extraordinary security requirements, you can build on the baseline installation by modifying the default configuration settings or by installing additional security hardware and software. Designing a baseline operating system installation is crucial to creating a secure network and smooth-running technical support. As a network administrator, you must understand the security capabilities of the operating systems on your network and be familiar with the default security settings that the installation program creates. You configure many of the security settings discussed in this chapter with tools that network administrators use every day, so the more famil iarity you have with these tools, the better. 8

Lesson 1: Selecting Computers and Operating Systems
Selecting the appropriate operating systems for your network s servers and worksta tions is essential to deploying an effective network installation. A well-governed network has policies that control which operating systems are permitted for the types of computers your organization uses and the roles that the computers play. Before you evaluate computers for purchase, you should have prepared a list of hardware require ments for each role your computers have to fill, based on the hardware products supported by the operating systems you plan to use. You should also have policies in place regarding how long you expect the organization to be using the computers and how frequently you will be upgrading the operating systems and applications.
