Because of the limited scope of the pilot deployment, any problems that occur as a result of undiscovered incompatibilities or misconfigurations will not be widespread and should not have a serious effect on network productivity. However, you should always have a rollback procedure as part of your pilot deployment plan, so that you can return to your original network configuration if serious problems arise that demand further development and testing. Your plan should include detailed procedures for the rollback, plus specific conditions under which the rollback should occur.

Lesson Summary
Testing is an essential part of any security configuration deployment. A proper testing program consists of two main phases: lab testing and a pilot deployment. A testing lab is defined as a network that is isolated from the organization s pro duction network and used to test specific network elements. A testing plan consists of individual test cases. A test case is a detailed procedure that fully tests a particular feature or setting. A pilot deployment is the introduction of technologies or configuration parameters that have already been tested in a lab onto a live production network on a limited basis. A pilot deployment plan specifies which users will participate in the deployment, how the users will be supported, and should include a rollback plan in the event that serious problems occur.

Deploying Security Configurations
Lesson 2: Introducing Security Templates
Windows Server 2003 includes another mechanism for deploying security configuration settings called security templates. A security template is a collection of configuration set tings stored as a text file with the .inf extension. A security template contains many of the same security parameters you learned to configure using Group Policy Objects in 9, Hardening Servers, but presents them in a unified interface and enables you to save your configurations as files and deploy them when and where they are needed.
After this lesson, you will be able to
List the parameters you can modify using a security template Use the Security Templates snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Describe the functions of the Windows Server 2003 pre-defined security templates
Estimated lesson time: 20 minutes
Understanding Security Templates
Security templates consist of policies and settings that you can use to control a com puter s security configuration using local policies or group policies. You can use secu rity templates to configure any of the following types of policies and parameters:
Account Policies Enables you to specify password restrictions, account lockout policies, and Kerberos policies Local Policies Enables you to configure audit policies, user rights assignments, and security options policies Event Log policies over policies Enables you to configure maximum event log sizes and roll-
Restricted Groups Enables you to specify the users who are permitted to be members of specific groups System Services system services Enables you to specify the startup types and permissions for
Registry permissions Enables you to set access control permissions for spe cific registry keys File System permissions Enables you to specify access control permissions for NTFS files and folders
You can deploy security templates in a variety of ways, using Active Directory directory service Group Policy Objects, the Windows Server 2003 Security Configuration And
