CA See certification authority (CA). cache For Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), a local information store of resource records for recently resolved names of remote hosts. Typically, the cache is built dynamically as the computer queries and resolves names. It also helps optimize the time required to resolve queried names. Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) The Media Access Control (MAC) mechanism used by Ethernet networks to regulate access to the network. Before they can transmit data, CSMA/CD systems listen to the network to determine if it is in use. If the network is free, the system transmits its data. However, sometimes another computer transmits at precisely the same time, causing a signal quality error or collision. Collisions are normal occurrences on Ethernet networks, and network interface adapters are capable of detecting them and compensating for them by discarding the collided packets and retransmitting them in a controlled manner. certificate A collection of data used for authentication and secure exchange of information on nonsecured networks, such as the Internet. A certificate securely binds a public key to the entity that holds the corresponding private key. Certificates are digitally signed by the issuing certification authority (CA) and can be managed for a user, computer, or service. The most widely accepted format for certificates is defined by the Telecommunication Standards Section of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T) X.509 international standard. certificate revocation list (CRL) A list of certificates that have been revoked, rendering them unusable. Certification authorities publish their CRLs at regular intervals, so that authenticating systems can check the validity of certificates. Certificate Services A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service that enables the computer to act as a certification authority that issues, renews, manages, and revokes digital certificates for an organization. Digital certificates have many uses including secure e-mail, Web-based authentication, and smart card authentication. certification authority (CA) An entity responsible for establishing the authenticity of public keys belonging to users or other CAs. Activities of a CA can include binding public keys to distinguished names through signed certificates, managing certificate serial numbers, and revoking certificates. Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) A challenge-response authentication protocol for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connections. It uses the Message Digest 5 (MD5) hashing algorithm to hash the combination of a challenge string issued by the authentication server and the user s password in the response. channel service unit/data service unit (CSU/DSU) A hardware device at either end of a leased telephone line that provides the connection to the network.

child domain For a Domain Name System (DNS), a domain located in the name space tree directly beneath another directory name (the parent domain). For example, sales.microsoft.com would be a child domain of the microsoft.com parent domain. A child domain is also called a subdomain. CIR See committed information rate (CIR). client A program designed to communicate with a server program on another computer, usually to request and receive information. The client provides the interface with which the user can view and manipulate the server data. A client can be a module in an operating system, which enables the user to access resources on the network s other computers, or a separate application, such as a World Wide Web browser or e-mail reader. client/server networking A computing model in which data processing tasks are distributed between clients, which request, display, and manipulate information, and servers, which supply and store information. When each client is responsible for displaying and manipulating its own data, the server is relieved of a large part of the processing burden. The alternative is a mainframe or minicomputer system in which one computer performs all the processing for all the users, who work with terminals that do not have processors (dumb terminals). clustering A group of two or more servers functioning as a single entity, to provide fault tolerance and load balancing to applications. collision In local area networking, a condition that occurs when two computers transmit data at precisely the same time and their signals occupy the same cable, causing data loss. On some types of networks, such as Ethernet, collisions are a normal occurrence, whereas on Token Ring networks, they are an indication of a serious problem. Also called a signal quality error. collision domain A group of computers connected in such a way that if any two transmit a message at exactly the same time, a collision occurs. COM+ See Component Object Model (COM+). command A word or phrase, usually found on a menu, that you click to carry out an action. You click a command on a menu or type a command at the command prompt. You can also type a command in the Run dialog box, which you open from the Start menu by clicking Run. Command Prompt window A window that appears on the Microsoft Windows desktop, used to interface with the operating system s command line. committed information rate (CIR) In a frame relay connection, the base data transmission rate agreed upon by the client and the service provider. Frame relay connections can exceed the CIR to a certain degree during periods of heavy traffic.
