Microsoft Windows Me. Ipconfig.exe is most useful on computers with TCP/IP clients configured automatically by a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server because it is the easiest way to view the assigned settings for the client system. You can also use Ipconfig.exe to release and renew TCP/IP configuration parameters assigned by DHCP. IPSec See IP Security protocol (IPSec). IPSec policy A collection of configuration settings containing rules, filter lists, and filter actions, which defined what network traffic IP Security (IPSec) should secure and how IPSec should secure it. IPv6 New version of the Internet Protocol (IP) that expands the IP address space from 32 to 128 bits. See also Internet Protocol (IP). IPX ISDN ISO ISP See Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX). See Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). See International Organization for Standardization (ISO). See Internet service provider (ISP).

iterative query In Domain Name System (DNS), a name resolution request query to which a server is expected to respond immediately with whatever information it has on the name. ITU ITU-T IXFR See International Telecommunications Union (ITU). See International Telecommunications Union-Telecommunication (ITU-T). See incremental zone transfer (IXFR).

KB Kilobyte, equal to 1,000 bytes. Kbps Kilobits per second, a unit of measurement typically used to measure network transmission speed. KBps Kilobytes per second, a unit of measurement typically used to measure network transmission speed. KDC See Key Distribution Center (KDC). Kerberos V5 An Internet standard security protocol for handling authentication of user or system identity. With Kerberos V5, passwords that are sent across network lines are encrypted, not sent as plain text. Kerberos V5 also includes other security features. Key Distribution Center (KDC) A network service that supplies session tickets and temporary session keys used in the Kerberos V5 authentication protocol.

LAN See local area network (LAN). Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) A protocol used to establish virtual private network connections across the Internet. See also virtual private network (VPN). layering The coordination of various protocols in a specific architecture that enables the protocols to work together to ensure that the data is prepared, transferred, received, and acted on as intended. LDAP See Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). lease identification cookie A string that consists of a computer s Internet Protocol (IP) address and its hardware address, which a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server uses to uniquely identify a client in its database. See also Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) The primary access protocol for the Active Directory service. LDAP version 3 is defined by a set of proposed standard documents published by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), including RFC 2251. link state protocol A dynamic routing protocol that rates the relative efficiency of network routes by the properties of the connections providing access to the destination. Compare with distance vector protocols, which use the number of hops to rate the efficiency of a network. The most common link state protocol is the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol. LLC See Logical Link Control sublayer (LLC). Lmhosts An ASCII text file used by Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) computers running Microsoft Windows operating systems to resolve Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS) names into IP addresses. Like the Hosts file used to resolve host names into IP addresses, an Lmhosts file is a list of the NetBIOS names assigned to computers on the network and their corresponding IP addresses. Lmhosts files can also contain special entries used to preload the computer s NetBIOS name cache or to identify the domain controllers on the network. Systems running the Windows operating system can use individual Lmhosts files for NetBIOS name resolution, but they more commonly use either network broadcast transmissions or the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). load balancing A technique used to scale the performance of a server-based program (such as a Web server) by distributing its client requests across multiple servers within the cluster. Typically, each host can specify the load percentage that it will handle, or the load can be equally distributed across all the hosts. If a host fails, the load is dynamically redistributed among the remaining hosts.
