NSLOOKUP.EXE A command-line utility that enables you to generate Domain Name System (DNS) queries and send them to specific name servers for testing and troubleshooting your DNS installation. NTFS One of the file systems included with the Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows NT operating systems. Compared to the file allocation table (FAT) file system also supported by Windows operating systems, NTFS supports larger volumes, includes transaction logs to help in recovery from disk failures, and enables network administrators to control access to specific directories and files. The main drawback to NTFS is that the drives are not accessible by any other operating systems. If you boot the computer with an MS-DOS disk, for example, the NTFS drives are invisible. Nwlink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol Microsoft Windows implementation of the Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) protocol suite, providing computers running Windows operating systems with Novell NetWare connectivity.

object An entity such as a file, folder, shared folder, printer, or Active Directory object described by a distinct, named set of attributes. For example, the attributes of a file object include its name, location, and size; the attributes of an Active Directory user object might include the user s first name, last name, and e-mail address. octet A data unit consisting of eight bits. See also byte. Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) A dynamic routing protocol that exchanges information with other routers on the network to update the system s routing table with current information about the configuration of the internetwork. OSPF is a link state protocol that evaluates routes based on their actual performance, rather than using a less accurate measurement such as the number of hops needed to reach a particular destination. Compare with distance vector protocols, in general, and the Routing Information Protocol (RIP), in particular. Open System authentication A null authentication method used by wireless local area networks (WLANs) using the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard that consists solely of messages in which one system identifies itself to another and the other system replies. There is no exchange of passwords, keys, or any other type of credential, and there is no way for a device configured to use Open System authentication to refuse authentication to another system.

Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model A theoretical model defined in documents published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Telecommunication Standards Section of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T), used for reference and teaching, that divides the computer networking functions into seven layers: from top to bottom, application, presentation, session, transport, network, data-link, and physical. However, the layers do not correspond exactly to any of the currently used networking protocol stacks. operating system The primary program running on a computer, which processes input and output, runs other programs, and provides access to the computer s hardware. organizational unit (OU) A type of Active Directory container object used within domains. OUs are logical containers into which you can place users, groups, computers, and other OUs. An OU can contain objects only from its parent domain. An OU is the smallest scope to which you can apply a group policy or delegate authority. OSI OSPF OU See Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model. See Open Shortest Path First (OSPF). See organizational unit (OU).

packet The largest unit of data that can be transmitted over a data network at any one time. Messages generated by applications are split into pieces and packaged into individual packets for transmission over the network. Each packet is transmit ted separately and can take a different route to the destination. When all the pack ets arrive at the destination, the receiving computer reassembles them into the original message. This is the basic functionality of a packet switching network. packet filtering A firewall technique in which a router is configured to prevent certain packets from entering a network. Packet filters can be created based on hardware addresses, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, port numbers, or other criteria. For example, you can configure a router to allow only certain computers to access the network from the Internet, or you can allow your network users access to Internet e-mail but deny them access to Internet Web servers. Although typically used to prevent intrusion into a private network from the Internet, packet filtering can also be used to limit access to one of the local area networks (LANs) on a private internetwork.
