protocol stack The multilayered arrangement of communications protocols that provides a data path ranging from the user application to the network medium. Although based on the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model, not every layer in the model is represented by a separate protocol. On a computer connected to a local area network (LAN), for example, the protocol stack generally consists of protocols at the application, transport, network, and data-link layers, the last of which includes a physical layer specification. proxy server An application layer firewall technique that enables Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) client systems to access Internet resources without being susceptible to intrusion from outside the network. A proxy server is an application that runs on a computer with a registered IP address, whereas the clients use unregistered IP addresses, making them invisible from the Internet. Client applications are configured to send their Internet service requests to the proxy server instead of directly to the Internet, and, using its own registered address, the proxy server relays the requests to the appropriate Internet server. On receiving a response from the Internet server, the proxy server relays it back to the original client. Proxy servers are designed for specific applications, and the client must be configured with the address of the proxy server. Adminis trators can also configure the proxy server to cache Internet information for later use and to restrict access to particular Internet sites. Compare with network address translation (NAT). See also firewall. PSTN See Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). public key The nonsecret half of a cryptographic key pair that is used with a public key algorithm. Public keys are typically used when encrypting a session key, verifying a digital signature, or encrypting data that can be decrypted with the corresponding private key. public key cryptography A method of cryptography in which two different keys are used: a public key for encrypting data and a private key for decrypting data. public key infrastructure (PKI) The term generally used to describe the laws, policies, standards, and software that regulate or manipulate certificates and public and private keys. In practice, it is a system of digital certificates, certification authorities, and other registration authorities that verify and authenticate the validity of each party involved in an electronic transaction. Standards for PKI are still evolving, even though they are being widely implemented as a necessary element of electronic commerce. Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) The standard copper-cable tele phone network used for analog voice communications around the world. Also known as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS).

quad A data unit consisting of eight bits. See also byte. query A specific request for data retrieval, modification, or deletion. quorum A storage resource in a cluster that contains all the configuration data needed for the recovery of the cluster. To create a cluster, the first node must be able to take control of the quorum resource, so that it can save the quorum data there.

recursive query In Domain Name System (DNS), a query in which a server is expected to take full responsibility for resolving the requested name, including issuing its own queries to other servers. redirector A network client component that determines whether a resource requested by an application is located on the network or on the local system, and then sends the request either to the local input/output system or to the networking protocol stack. A computer can have multiple redirectors to support different networks, such as a network running Microsoft Windows and a network running Novell NetWare. refresh To update displayed information with current data. refresh interval A period of time used by secondary masters of a zone to determine how often to check to see if their zone data needs to be refreshed. When the refresh interval expires, the secondary master checks with its source for the zone to see whether its zone data is still current or needs to be updated using a zone transfer. This interval is set in the SOA (start-of-authority) resource record for each zone. remote access Part of the integrated Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Routing and Remote Access service that provides remote networking for telecommuters, mobile workers, and system administrators who monitor and manage servers at multiple branch offices. Remote Access Server (RAS) Any computer running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 that is configured to accept remote access connections. Remote Assistance A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows XP feature that enables users to request help from a designated expert, who can then connect to their computers, view their activities, and take control of the console.
