The second Exchange server generation used Active Directory as its directory service and extended Exchange s functionality beyond e-mail by adding Conferencing Services and Instant Messaging. Exchange Server 2000 and 2003 belong to the second Exchange server generation.

Exchange Server 2000 was the first application that fully depended on Microsoft s new directory service, Active Directory. Exchange 2000 (codenamed Platinum or Pt) was released to manufacturing on August 31, 2000, and is version 6.0. It required Windows Server 2000 as the operating system and thus no longer supported Windows NT 4.0. The Exchange Administrator program was exchanged with the Exchange System Manager (ESM) that was based on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) framework. On the Exchange database level, the concept of Storage Groups was implemented, providing the functionality to host multiple Mailbox Stores (now called mailbox databases) in a Storage Group. One Exchange server was now able to host as many as 20 databases. Cluster support was extended from two to four nodes. Multiple Public Folder hierarchies were also introduced. Unfortunately, MAPI (the dominant client protocol) and API did not support more than one hierarchy; thus this feature was bound to die quickly. Exchange 2000 moved from an X.400 Message Transport Agent (MTA) to an SMTP MTA. The SMTP connectors (until then known as IMS) became virtual SMTP servers linked into the new transport engine. This was a pretty fundamental move for the product.

For migration, the Active Directory Connector (ADC) was included that connected an Exchange 5.5 directory service to Active Directory for smoothly moving users over to Exchange 2000. Exchange 2000 also introduced the first Exchange Instant Messaging (later moved to Live Communication Server, or LCS, which was then renamed to Office Communication Server 2007, or OCS 2007, as it is known today). The Exchange Conferencing Server was another new feature, but both products were removed from Exchange in the next version. Notes from the field

Exchange MVP
n a keynote I delivered at the Microsoft Exchange Conference in 2000, I discussed the introduction of right-click functionality in the management console. I received
some applause from the 4,000 people in the hall and replied that I wasn t responsible for the feature but that I d be happy to share the clap with the engineers. about two nanoseconds later I realized what I had said and so did the audience, which dissolved in laughter. For months afterwards, I received messages from engineers in the Exchange development group who politely inquired about my experience. I can t think of how many MpEG clips of my unfortunate comments I received too!
Exchange 2000 also introduced the concept of Administrative Groups and Routing Groups to separate the scope of administration from the message routing scope. Thus administrators could provide mail administrators with exactly the right permissions for managing their servers without interfering with the organization s routing connectors. However, the administrative model had some faults that prevented large, dispersed companies that needed a split-administrative model from rolling out Exchange 2000. With Routing Groups came the concept of intelligent routing, called Link State updates, that was used until Exchange 2003. Exchange matured further by using the LocalSystem account to run its services instead of maintaining its own administration accounts whose smooth operation could easily be disrupted by simple actions such as passwords expiring.
Exchange 2003
Exchange Server 2003 s first codename was Exchange .NET it had fallen into the .NET phase of Microsoft when almost all products had that suffix, but later the codename was changed to Titanium, or Ti. It was released on June 30, 2003, as version 6.5 and it further built on the foundation established by Exchange 2000. It was the first Exchange version based on Active Directory widely accepted by customers; many large companies migrated their Exchange 5.5 environments to Exchange 2003.
