Deciding how large to make mailbox databases should be based on service level agreements (SLAs), whether the database will be in a DAG, and the type of storage you will be using. The primary factor for determining the maximum database size should be the service level agreement that needs to be met. In the case of a database failure you need to be able to restore mailbox data. If the damaged database has multiple copies within the DAG, recovery is instantaneous; however, you will need time to reseed the failed database copy. If the database is not highly available, recovery may need to be done from a backup copy. If the SLA requires an outage not last more than four hours, you must be able to restore the database from backup within the SLA. If you can restore 100 GB each hour from backup the database should be 400 GB smaller to be able to meet the SLA. However in a DAG with at least two copies of each database, it is still not recommended to have databases larger than 2 TB. Finally, if you are planning to use a JBOD configuration, you want to make sure that the database is small enough to leave room for transaction logs, content indexing, and other growth. If you were to use a 1.5-TB SATA drive for storing a mailbox database copy, you would want to size the database to leave room for transaction logs and content indexes. When the maximum database size is chosen, the number of mailboxes in each database can be determined. For Litware s deployment the maximum database size has been set to be 500 GB; each database can have 379 (500 GB maximum database size / 1,317 MB mailbox size = 379 Mailboxes) of the 1,024 MB mailboxes mentioned earlier.

Transaction log files capture all changes that are made to each database. The number of transaction logs generated each depends on the number and size of changes made to the database. In cases where a backup-less configuration is deployed, circular logging should be enabled so that transaction log files are truncated after the data has been committed to each database in the DAG. For more information on backup-less environments and database recovery see 12. In cases where circular logging is not enabled, transaction logs accumulate until they are truncated with either a full or an incremental backup. In these cases, you must estimate the number of transaction logs that will be generated between successful backups so that enough storage can be provisioned. Table 13-6 shows an estimate of the number of transaction log files that will be generated depending on the average message size and the number of messages sent and received each day.

In some cases hardware problems or maintenance activities will cause backup jobs to not run or complete within the backup window. When this occurs transaction logs may not be truncated and will continue to accumulate. As a best practice, enough space should be available to sustain at least two failed backup attempts. Finally, as best practice, to provide for a margin of error or unexpected growth be sure to size an additional 20 percent of additional space.
