in this space. The difference to Exchange Online is that the Microsoft develops a product to operate as smoothly in a hosted environment as it does in an on-premises deployment. This book focuses on Exchange On-Premises, but 10, Federated Sharing, provides information on how to connect another Exchange organization to your Exchange environment, including information on how to connect Exchange to Exchange Online. For more information about Exchange Online, see http://www.microsoft.com/online/ exchange-online.mspx. Notes from the field

areas of administration, maintenance, and upgrade. On the other hand, you have to make sure that the link between your offices and Exchange Online is redundant so that network problems will not interfere with your messaging system. One of the most critical areas I see currently in Europe is security. Because Exchange Online hosts the mailboxes in centralized datacenters throughout Europe, one in Dublin and one in amsterdam, the county s laws might not allow storing company-related data in a foreign country. This is the situation as of 2010; remember that Microsoft may have other datacenters in place in Europe in the coming years. It can also be company policy not to store any sensitive data outside the company, which would prevent migrating fully to Exchange Online. however, the big opportunity I see here is with regard to hybrid implementations, in which you mix Exchange 2010 and Exchange Online. You move your non-critical mailboxes to the cloud and keep your important or business-critical mailboxes on-premises.

Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1
Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is scheduled to be released in third quarter 2010. Traditionally, service packs have been bug fixes and security updates. Of course, SP1 still includes all Exchange 2010 RTM Update Rollups and several other bug fixes, but also includes additional functionality and some new features. SP1 also comes with a schema update that requires you to plan the update accordingly. Table 1-4 provides an overview of what is newly added by SP1 and in which chapter of this book you can find more information.

Schema and Domain Update
3
SP1 requires you to update the Active Directory schema and every domain. 4 Outlook UI includes improvements with the goal of better user experience on different screen sizes, such as on netbooks. Outlook Themes allow you to select different layout styles for OWA. Calendar print allows you to select a calendar view and print it accordingly. Support adding inline images while composing new e-mail. Long-running operations do not block user experience. Auto-save drafts while composing new e-mail. Accounts used no longer need to be mailbox-enabled. RBAC management has been improved. Calendar sharing permission management for the end user is included. Create and configure transport and journaling rules. Manage Exchange ActiveSync Policies and ActiveSync Access Settings. Manage quarantined devices and Device Access Rules. Manage RBAC Roles Groups and User Roles (covered in more detail in 16). Create and manage resource mailboxes and security groups. Create and manage Allow/Block/Quarantine policies. Includes support for certificate authentication.

RPC Client Access
Includes enhanced monitoring and diagnostic tools. Supports cross-premises and datacenter scenarios. Can now be turned on/off. Includes delay throttling for users. Protects CAS and Active Directory from being overwhelmed by a single user. Includes enhanced monitoring. Photos are not only available from local contracts, but also from GALs. They are also cached locally and thus available offline. Enhanced EAS throttling support such as configure that a user can only connect a single device. Block/Quarantine notification to mobile device. Includes Simple Rights Management Messaging. 5 Classifies a message based on certain characteristics and assigns it a delivery class. Throttling will investigate messages when they are sent by individual users and add a cost to each message based on message size, number of recipients, and frequency. This cost factor allows assigning a delivery class to the messages. 6 7 8 Monitor and track how quickly the log is growing.
