Before installing Exchange it is important to ensure that the operating system has all critical updates applied. This should coincide with the updating standards set through your change management process. To be sure all updates have been applied, run the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. To obtain a list of all applicable updates that may not be considered vulnerability updates you can also run Microsoft Update. Finally, make sure to run the current version of the Malicious Software Removal Tool. This tool is updated each month and is distributed via Microsoft Update to scan, clean, and report any known malicious software installed on the computer. Notes from the field

Installing Only Minimum Prerequisites
andy Schan
Owner, Schan Consulting
n one migration, I had specified that only the minimum prerequisites for the specific role be installed on the servers. rather than having servers with
inconsistent versions of components installed, the customer felt that management would be easier if the basic prerequisites were installed on all servers. The trade-off with this approach is consistency and ease of deployment over a reduction in the number of components that must be maintained with periodic updates. In some cases you may want to install all prerequisites on all servers for consistency, or install the minimum for the roles the choice depends on the environments. also, rather than deploying the minimum versions of components such as the Microsoft .NET Framework, it is usually advisable to install the latest supported version of the components. Updates to each of the components usually provide security enhancements and are more likely to include fixes to known problems that could affect your Exchange deployment.
It is recommended to use Windows Server 2008 R2 for all Exchange 2010 deployments, which reduces the number of prerequisites that need to be installed. Using Windows Server 2008 R2 also provides better processor and power utilization than Windows Server 2008; both of these translate into operational cost savings. Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1 introduced the ability for setup to install any prerequisite Windows Roles and Features. The next several sections review manually installing the prerequisites on both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

To get a Windows Server 2008 server ready for Exchange 2010 installation, first you must install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the first family update or higher. Then install the Windows Management Framework, which includes both Windows Remote Management (WinRM) 2.0 and Windows PowerShell V2. On servers that will host the Hub Transport or Mailbox server role, install the Microsoft Filter Pack (http://go.microsoft.com/ fwlink/ LinkId=123380). After downloading and installing the required software, you need to make a number of configuration changes to be ready for installing Exchange 2010. The Exchange 2010 media includes XML-based files that specify the required roles and features that need to be installed. To use these to install the prerequisites, first open an elevated command prompt, navigate to the Scripts folder in the root folder of the Exchange 2010 installation media, and use one of the following commands on servers that will host multiple roles to install the necessary operating system components:
Client Access, Hub Transport, and the Mailbox role:
