One way to let users know their SMTP service settings is to configure the set-ReceiveConnector cmdlet with the AdvertiseClientSettings parameter. This parameter enables the help menu in Outlook Web App to display the SMTP server name, port number, and authentication settings. POP3 and IMAP4 only support proxying, as shown in Figure 4-29. Proxy configuration is now automatic, and no additional configuration is needed to enable cross-site support.

One significant change in Exchange 2010 is in its security settings. Exchange 2010 no longer supports NTLM authentication for POP3 or IMAP4. PlainTextAuthentication no longer allows Secure Password Authentication (SPA) and the client must support Kerberos authentication. It is still a best practice to leave the default setting to SecureLogin, which requires TLS encryption and provides the best security.

Note
The Client access server blocks pOp3 and IMap4 from the anonymous and Guest
accounts. additionally, the administrator account cannot be used either. To access the administrator mailbox, you must use Outlook or Outlook Web app.
A few other settings worth mentioning are used to control the number of POP3 and IMAP4 connections. They are listed in Table 4-9.
TABLE 4-9 POP3/IMAP4 Connection Settings
NAME
DEFAULT AND RANGE
MaxConnectionFromSingleIP MaxConnections MaxConnectionsPerUser
2,000; 1 25,000 2,000; 1 25,000 16; 1 25,000
MaxConnectionsFromSingleIP may need to be configured to a higher number if clients are coming through a firewall or load balancer that uses NAT. In this configuration, all of the connections coming into the Client Access server will appear to originate from the same IP address. Organizations with large numbers of clients utilizing POP3 or IMAP4 may need to raise the number of MaxConnections. This setting controls the overall number of simultaneous connections that can be made to the Client Access server. Finally, MaxConnectionsPerUser controls the number of connections originating from a single user. In the case where you have an application (such as third-party voicemail integration software) that makes a connection with a service account this setting may need to be raised. As with all of these settings, there is a trade-off between number of connections and server performance. You can t apply a simple formula to determine what the settings should be. It will depend on factors such as server hardware, client software, and user profiles.
Client access Summary
As you can see, the mixture of protocols, client versions, and other factors makes Client Access server planning complex. Table 4-10 summarizes each access method and its ability to redirect and proxy Client Access Server connections.

Client Access in Exchange 2010
Client access high availability
This section will work through the complex task of designing a highly available Client Access layer. Removing single points of failure requires that redundant Client Access servers be available. However, after you add multiple hosts, you have two problems to solve:
1. 2.
How to direct traffic between hosts How to maintain session information if required
affinity
Some Exchange applications are stateful, meaning the application needs to remember what the client was doing previously. However, if you have multiple hosts, or when you re using stateless protocols such as HTTP, this state information will be lost between client calls. In the case of multiple load-balanced hosts, affinity is a mechanism to direct calls to a host that was chosen in the initial request. Before we go into a deeper discussion on load-balancing solutions, it is important to understand the different types of affinity and how they are used. The Client Access server uses a number of protocols that will need to be load balanced, including HTTP and RPC. Remember also that some Client Access server services require affinity and some do not. When choosing a load-balancing solution that will meet the potentially diverse requirements, remember that it may need to support a variety of affinity types.
