Use as few numbers of certificates as possible. You can secure each Exchange service with a unique certificate, but that will be harder to manage and possibly cost more money in the end. Namespaces are the reason you may need multiple certificates. For example, in companies using POP3 or IMAP4, the friendly URL could be imap.company.com, whereas POP could be pop.company.com. Instead of these separate names, they could both share mail.company.com. Internet Information Server (IIS) Many of the Exchange services are exposed through Internet Information Server (IIS) in Windows. By default, they share the same certificate because they are all in the default Web application pool. These services include:

In general, most deployments can get away with just using two namespaces: one for all of the IIS services and one for AutoDiscover. As documented, there is no requirement for the host FQDN as a subject alternate name, with a few exceptions. First is the ECP. Earlier in this chapter you saw that Client Access servers that are the target of a proxy site should be configured with the host name instead of the NLB FQDN. This is because Outlook 2010 integrates with ECP for some of its functionality. Outlook, unlike Client Access server-to-Client Access server proxy, will not ignore mismatched certificate settings and will signal an error if the host name is not on the certificate. Another scenario in which the host FQDN is required is when users are accessing services with short names. For example, users may just type https://mail into their Web browsers to access OWA. POP3/IMAP4 As mentioned earlier, these services can have separate namespaces or share a common one with the IIS services. It is recommended that you limit the number of certificates and certificate namespaces wherever possible. Live Federation The certificate used for Live Federation can have any name on it. During the configuration of this service you must select the certificate to be used. This certificate must be issued by a third-party certificate authority that is trusted by Windows Live. Client Access Server to Client Access Server Proxy In more complex multi-site scenarios, sometimes Client Access servers do not have Internet connectivity. For users to reach their mailbox stores, the Internet-facing Client Access server must proxy the requests to the internal-only host. All communication between Client Access servers is secured with SSL over HTTP. Remember that the goal is to always have the Client Access server closest to the mailbox process requests. Client Access servers use specific host names when making proxy requests. In spite of this, the FQDNs are not required because in this case, the Client Access server ignores most of the certificate information. The certificate is used strictly for encryption and not authentication. If your organization requires a higher level of security for these internal requests, set the following registry key: Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeOWA\ AllowInternalUntrustedCerts Value: 0 Type: DWORD Office Communication Server (OCS) Integration The OCS R2 server needs to communicate securely with the Client Access server for the instant messaging integration to work. The OCS R2 server needs to be configured to allow access to the subject name listed on the certificate.
