In practice, this is a just a slightly different configuration compared to the wildcard certificate solution. Here, the external URLs are directed to the hardware load balancer. The main advantage in this design is that the hardware load balancer handles the upfront connection, removing the extra processing required by the Client Access server in Denver in the other solution. For smaller implementations, the extra cost of a hardware load balancer may be hard to justify. However, many newer devices are available at a lower price. To fully eliminate the hardware load balancer as a single point of failure, multiple hardware devices may be required.
INTELLIGENT FIrEWaLL
An intelligent firewall and a hardware load balancer are very similar; however, the intelligent firewall offers additional flexibility over most hardware load balancers. An intelligent firewall, such as Microsoft s Thread Management Gateway (TMG), can use Active Directory groups to make decisions on how to route users, as shown in Figure 4-41.

Of course, this means processes must be in place to keep group information up to date. This also places an additional dependency on Active Directory replication to keep group information current across sites. Intelligent firewall is one of the more complex designs, but it can offer complimentary features, including link translation and URL filtering. Table 4-12 summarizes the different strategies discussed in this case study.

FaBrIKaM SOLUTION
Fabrikam picked the SAN Certificate and MSSTD as their solution. This configuration was beneficial because it did not require additional hardware purchases. Fabrikam was fortunate to have enough network infrastructure between its datacenters to support the extra traffic of supporting cross-WAN traffic.

Litware Inc will implement a very similar design to Contoso, except that it will use regional namespaces to ensure that traffic does not cross its WANs. Litware Inc will deploy a high-availability solution within the regional datacenter, either with a software or hardware load balancer. Only the three hub sites Fresno, Berlin, and Tokyo have Exchange servers. The spoke sites, such as Kobe, Prague, and Madrid, will not have Exchange servers locally. Figure 4-43 shows how the sites will configure their certificates and URLs. Fresno, Berlin, and Tokyo will replace Region with the region-specific information. Tokyo, for example, will use Tokyo.litwareinc.com as their URL for OWA.
