This is useful when you have a worksheet in which adjusting the column width to allow a particular cell entry to be visible has undesirable effects on the rest of the sheet, or where angled text, vertical text, and wrapped text aren t feasible solutions. In Figure 8-20, the same text was entered in cells A1 and A2, but the Shrink To Fit option was applied to cell A2. The assigned size of the font does not change in a cell with a Shrink To Fit-adjusted font size. The assigned font size is retained; therefore, no matter how wide you make the column, the contents expand only to the assigned size. The Shrink To Fit option can be a good way to solve a problem, but keep in mind that this option reduces the font to as small a size as necessary. If the cell is narrow enough and the cell contents long enough, the result might be too small to read. Selecting Alignment Using Toolbars
You can select Align Left, Center, Align Right, or Merge And Center by clicking the corresponding buttons on the Formatting toolbar. When you turn on one of the toolbar alignment options, its button appears as if it has been pressed to show that the option is selected. As a result, you can always glance at the toolbar to see whether one of these alignment options has been applied to the active cell. Use the following guidelines when working with the toolbar alignment options: To turn an alignment option off (and return the active cell to General alignment), click
the button a second time.
The Increase Indent button on the Standard toolbar applies the Left (Indent) format.
Increase Indent
However, this button does not turn the alignment option off when clicked a second time. Instead, each click increases the indent by another character width. To reduce indentation, use the adjacent Decrease Indent button. Part 3: Formatting and Editing Worksheets

The Merge And Center button on the Formatting toolbar does two things: first, it
Merge and Center
merges the selected cells to form a single cell, and then it applies center alignment to the cell. This button is a toggle, removing center alignment and unmerging cells when clicked a second time. For more information about merged cells, see Merging and Unmerging Cells on page 237. Using Fonts
The term font refers to a typeface (such as Arial), along with its attributes (such as point size and color). In Excel, you use the Font tab in the Format Cells dialog box to select fonts. Use fonts in a worksheet just as you do in printed text: to emphasize headings and to distinguish different kinds of information. To specify a font for a cell or for a range, select the cell or range; choose Format, Cells (or press Ctrl+1); and click the Font tab, shown in Figure 8-21. 8

Figure 8-21. On the Font tab you can assign typefaces, character styles, sizes, colors, and effects to your cell entries. The numbers in the Size list show the sizes at which Excel can optimally print the selected typeface, but you can enter any number even fractional point sizes up to two decimal places. Unless you preset the row height, Excel adjusts the height as needed to accommodate the largest point size in the row. The available font styles vary, depending on the typeface you select in the Font list box. Most fonts offer italic, bold, and bold italic styles. To reset the selected cells to the font and size defined as the Normal style, select the Normal Font option.
