Excel normally ignores any hidden rows or columns in a chart s data range. If you want hidden cells to be plotted, create the chart in the normal way. Select any element of the chart, choose Tools, Options, go to the Chart tab, and then clear the Plot Visible Cells Only check box.

Don t hold down Ctrl If you select the chart object rather than an element of the chart, the Plot Visible Cells Only check box is unavailable. If you see clear (white) handles around the perimeter of the chart, you ve selected an embedded chart object. Be sure you re not holding down Ctrl, and then select again.

If you interpolate, Excel draws a straight line to bridge the gap created by a missing value; it does not actually interpolate a new point. Hence, this option is meaningful only in line, xy (scatter), and radar charts, and only in data series that connect points with lines (that is, it s not meaningful in a series that uses unconnected markers).

Changing the Default Chart Type
Excel s factory default chart type is a two-dimensional clustered column chart that is, a vertical bar chart in which series are plotted side by side along a single category axis. To make a different type of chart the default
1 Create a chart. 2 Select the chart, and choose Chart, Chart Type. 3 In the Chart Type dialog box, click Set As Default Chart.
If you find yourself using a particular combination of chart formatting settings again and again, add that chart to the Custom Types tab of the Chart Type dialog box, and then make your new custom type the default.
Printing Charts
To print a chart that appears on a separate chart sheet, simply activate the sheet and follow the printing procedures described in 11, Printing and Presenting. To print an embedded chart object, you can do either of the following:
To print the chart by itself, select it and then choose File, Print. To print the chart with surrounding worksheet data, select any part of the worksheet,

but not the chart. Then choose File, Print.
Part 8: Creating Charts
Basic Charting Techniques
Saving, Opening, and Protecting Charts
Charts are saved with the workbook in which they reside. To save a chart, simply save the workbook file. After you create a chart, you can choose Tools, Protection to lock the worksheet or chart sheet containing the chart. Then other people can t change the sheet and, therefore, the chart. The Protection command works the same way for both worksheets and chart sheets.
Working with Embedded Chart Objects
As mentioned, a chart embedded on a worksheet is an object, just like an embedded picture, calendar control, or anything else that you might add to your worksheet via the Insert, Object command. You can assign a macro to it, and move it forward or back relative to other objects, by using the same kinds of actions that you would apply to other kinds of objects. For details about working with objects, see 9, Advanced Formatting and Editing Techniques. The one important point you have to remember about working with a chart object is that to select it as an object, you need to hold down Ctrl while you click. Otherwise, you ll be selecting an element of the chart, not the entire object. When you ve selected the object, white (clear) handles appear around its perimeter, and a name, such as Chart 1, appears in the name box. If you see black handles around the chart, you ve selected the chart area (an element of the chart), not the chart object. From the VBA perspective, an embedded chart is a member of the ChartObjects class, whose parent is the worksheet on which the chart resides. You could select a chart, for example, with something like the following:
