Setting Minimum and Maximum Values. When all the values in your chart are positive, Excel s default value axis begins at 0 and ends somewhere above the highest value in the chart. If all the values are negative, the scale normally begins somewhere below the lowest value and ends at 0. If the chart includes both positive and negative values, the default scale starts below the lowest value and ends above the highest. In a chart containing only positive values, you can zoom in on the plot area by changing the value in the Minimum box from 0 to a number that approximates the lowest value in the chart. In a chart containing only negative values, you can zoom in by making a similar change to the value in the Maximum box.

Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Inside Out Changing the Position of Tick Marks and Gridlines. The Major Unit and Minor Unit values on the Scale tab of the Format Axis dialog box determine the position of major and minor tick marks, if you choose to display them. For example, to increase the space between gridlines, increase the value in the Major Unit box, the Minor Unit box, or both. Changing the Intersection of the Category Axis. By default, the category axis crosses the value axis at 0. To position it elsewhere, type a value other than 0 in the Category (X) Axis Crosses At box. Excel then clears the associated Auto check box. To restore the normal axis position, reselect the Auto check box. You can also modify the position of the category axis by selecting the Category (X) Axis Crosses At Maximum Value box at the bottom of the dialog box. Excel then displays the axis at the top of the chart (unless you also select the Values In Reverse Order box). Using Logarithmic Scaling. In a logarithmic scale, each power of 10 is separated by the same distance along the axis. For example, in a logarithmic scale that runs from 1 through 10,000, the numbers 1, 10, 100, 1,000, and 10,000 are equally spaced. Scientific and other types of technical charts can often benefit from logarithmic scaling. To use logarithmic scaling, select the Logarithmic Scale check box on the Scale tab of the Format Axis dialog box. To restore linear (nonlogarithmic) scaling, clear this check box. In a logarithmic scale, the lowest value is 1. You cannot plot negative and 0 values. If you apply logarithmic scaling to a chart that contains negative or 0 values, Excel displays an error message and removes those values from the chart. To restore them, restore linear scaling. Reversing the Value-Axis Scale. You can turn the value-axis scale upside down so that the highest values appear near the bottom of the chart and the lowest values appear near the top. This option is convenient if all your chart values are negative and you re interested primarily in the absolute value of each point. You might also find it handy in cases in which lower values are considered better for example, in a chart that plots your golf score over time. To reverse the scale, select the Values In Reverse Order check box on the Scale tab. Scaling a Non Time-Scaled Category Axis Manually. To scale a non time-scaled category axis manually, select it, choose Format, Format Selected Axis. Then click the Scale tab of the Format Axis dialog box, shown in Figure 25-16. Changing the Intersection of the Value Axis. By default, the value axis crosses the category axis to the left of the first category s data markers. However, you can position its crossing point elsewhere. Type a value other than 1 in the Value (Y) Axis Crosses At Category Number box. To restore the normal position of the axis, change this value back to 1. You might want to consider moving the value axis to the middle of a chart if that chart s purpose is to compare two sets of values (see Figure 25-17 for an example). Here we ve put a 2 in the Value (Y) Axis Crosses At Category Number box, telling Excel to draw the value axis to the left of category 2 (Bob).
