Drop lines are straight lines that extend from a data point to the category axis. Drop lines are particularly useful in multiple-series area charts, but you can add them to any twodimensional or three-dimensional line or area chart. Select a series, choose Format, Selected Data Series, click the Options tab, and then select the Drop Lines check box.

You can use your mouse to detonate pies and doughnuts. Click a marker and drag it away from the chart s center. (You can explode only the outermost ring of a doughnut chart, however. The inner rings are impervious.) To implode, drag a marker back toward the center. Note that when you drag a pie slice or doughnut bite, the whole pie or doughnut comes apart. If you just want to drag a particular marker away from the rest of the chart, click that marker twice (with a pause between clicks). After you have a single marker selected, drag it.

Pie-column and pie-pie charts are pie charts in which Excel splits out one or more series into a second chart a column chart or a second pie chart. The second chart provides a more detailed look at a portion of the first chart. To convert an ordinary pie chart into a pie-pie or pie-column chart, select any part of the chart and choose Chart, Chart Type. You ll find the pie-pie and pie-column subtypes on the right side of the Pie gallery. By default, Excel derives the detail portion of your pie-pie or pie-column chart from the last two series of the main chart. However, Excel has many other options for splitting the chart. To see these options, select a series point from an existing pie-pie or pie-column chart, choose Format, Selected Data Series, and then click the Options tab. Figure 25-31 shows some of your choices.

Figure 25-31. Excel provides many options for organizing and formatting a pie-pie or pie-column chart.
You can split your chart by position (the last n points in a series go to the detail chart), by absolute value (all points less than n go to the detail chart), or by percent value (all slices less than n percent of the total go to the detail chart). Alternatively, you can select Custom in the Split Series By list, and then drag slices from the main chart to the detail chart. However you choose to split, your options are the same for both pie-pie and pie-column charts. The only difference between the two kinds of chart lies in the shape of the detail component. However
Enhancing the Appearance of Your Charts you choose to split, Excel redraws the main chart to show a single slice representing all the slices shown in the detail chart. By default, Excel draws series lines from the edges of this single slice of primary chart to the entire detail chart. You can remove the series lines by clearing the Series Lines check box. Excel makes the diameter of the detail pie or the detail column 75 percent of the height of the main chart. To change these relative sizes, enter a different percentage value in the Size Of Second Plot spin box. You can also move the detail plot closer or farther away from the main plot by entering larger or smaller values in the Gap Width spin box.
Changing the Angle of the First Pie Slice or Doughnut Bite
By default, Excel draws the beginning radius for the first marker in a doughnut or pie series at a 45-degree angle from the vertical. In other words, if the pie or doughnut were a clock face, the first radius would point toward a spot midway between one o clock and two o clock. You can change the angle by selecting a series point, choosing Format, Selected Data Series, clicking the Options tab, and modifying Angle Of First Slice.
