A radar chart is a chart in which each data point gets a separate copy of a single value axis, with the axis copies distributed radially around a center point. Because each series gets its own value-axis copy, the chart has no need for a category axis. Figure 27-6 shows one of these remarkable creatures. If you leave the lines in place, each series becomes a closed polygon, and by studying the shapes of the polygons you can divine the message of the chart. In Figure 27-6, for example, all three polygons stick out at the Larson point, telling us that Larson has a high degree of all three attributes. The three lines fold inward, about halfway to the center, on the Kent point, suggesting that Kent has a moderate amount of each attribute and so on. 690

Advanced Charting Techniques When you create a radar chart, Excel draws major value-axis gridlines by default. The gridlines make it easier to determine the magnitude of each data point but more difficult to discern the shapes of the series (see Figure 27-7). If the lines diminish the effectiveness of your chart, choose Chart, Chart Options, click the Gridlines tab, and clear the appropriate check box.

Charts of any type are easier to understand, the fewer points and series they plot. With a radar chart, in particular, it s a good idea to limit the number of series. With a three-series chart, for example, the three value-axis copies appear at right angles to one another and resemble the familiar x-y-z coordinate system. The series polygons, meanwhile, are triangles and can be visualized as intersecting planes. Such a chart (see Figure 27-8) is probably easier to understand than the one shown in Figure 27-6. In all events, the radar chart is suitable only for data series that fall within a common numeric range. Because you can t plot outlying series on a second value axis, as you can in other chart types, the radar chart is essentially useless for plotting values in widely separated orders of magnitude.

Creating Gannt Charts
The recommended way to create a Gannt chart is with a project-management program, such as Microsoft Project. But if you must create it in Excel, you can sort of. Figure 27-9 shows a primitive Gannt chart created in Excel. This chart uses Floating Bars, an option on the Custom Types tab of the Chart Type dialog box. It plots two series a start date and a duration. The start date is plotted as an offset from some date. Task 1, for example, begins 0 days from this reference point, Task 2 starts 4 days from the reference point, and so on. This first series is formatted to be invisible (that is, it s formatted with no border and no fill). The duration series is plotted as horizontal bars stacked on top of the start-date series. Hence, each point in the duration series is offset horizontally by the value of the corresponding point in the start-date series. You can t tell by the grayscale image in Figure 27-9, but the Floating Bars chart type uses a forest-green gradient fill for the chart area. The tick-mark labels for both axes, meanwhile, are reversed out against this dark background. If you re not keen on green, you might want to play with the formatting. You might also want to reverse the plot order on the category axis so that the first task appears at the top and the last at the bottom (the conventional order for Gannt charts). To do this, select the category axis, choose Format, Selected Axis, click the Scale tab, and select Categories In Reverse Order.
