Armed with an understanding of the INDEX function, you can use a list box control on a worksheet to create an attractive data browser. Figure 28-40 illustrates this idea. The fields in the form at B6:G15 use the value of B5 as a row_number argument for an INDEX formula, which retrieves a value from the list on the pacadata worksheet.

We ve added a list box control to this worksheet and placed it atop cell D4. This list box control is linked to cell B5, which is scrunched into a narrow row and made invisible by a gray band. In the form at B6:G15, the cells in columns D and G use the value of B5 as a row_number argument for an INDEX formula, which in turn retrieves data from the list stored on the pacadata worksheet. At D6, for example, we have the formula
=INDEX(pacadata!$A$2:$U$16,'Animal Info'!$B$5,1)
Because the item currently selected in the list box control, Acero Marka s Endora 2304, is the first item in the list, cell B5 contains (invisibly) the value 1. The INDEX formula therefore retrieves the item at the intersection of row 1 and column 1 in pacadata!A2:U16. The formula in cell D7 looks just like the one in D6, except that it uses a column_number argument of 2, and so on.
Part 9: Managing Databases and Lists
Managing Information in Lists Figure 28-41 shows the browser on a normal-looking worksheet, complete with row and column headings. To make the browser look a little classier (and less spreadsheet-like), you can choose Tools, Options, click the View tab, and clear the Row & Column Headers check box. To create a list box control, follow these steps:
1 Choose View, Toolbars, Forms. 2 On the Forms toolbar, select the list box item and drag out a rectangle to position the
control on the worksheet.
3 Right-click the new control and choose Format Control. 4 On the Control tab of the Format Control dialog box (see Figure 28-42), fill out the
Input Range and Cell Link boxes. The Input Range box specifies a worksheet range containing the items you want to appear in your list box. The Cell Link box specifies a cell that will record the position within Input Range of the item that is currently selected in the list control box.
5 Select the Single option button. This ensures that the user of your browser will be able
to select only one item at a time.
6 Click OK.

Microsoft Excel is a superb tool for analyzing data, but before you can do any analysis, you have to get the data into Excel. In many cases, the information you need to work with resides somewhere outside in a mainframe text file, on a Web site, in an XML file, or in a database program such as Oracle or Microsoft Access. Excel provides excellent tools for importing that information onto your worksheets; those tools are the subject of this chapter.
