The AutoCalculate area of the status bar normally displays the sum of the selected values, but if you right-click the area, a menu appears that has other options you can choose from. For example, choosing Count provides the number of selected nonblank cells, while Count Nums returns the number of selected cells that contain only numbers. Click None to turn off the AutoCalculate display.

When you first start Excel, two toolbars are visible on the screen: the Standard and the Formatting toolbars, shown in Figure 2-13. These toolbars contain a lot of helpful buttons, but they are only the tip of the iceberg. Excel has many more toolbars, and you can place a staggering number of additional buttons on them.

Excel offers a smorgasbord of toolbars filled with buttons designed to simplify repetitive operations. You can build your own toolbars, choosing from over 500 predefined buttons, palettes, and drop-down list boxes, or using buttons that you create yourself. Even the Excel menu bar is a toolbar of sorts that you can customize and reposition on the screen. Excel includes a number of built-in toolbars that provide handy shortcuts for many common actions. Some of the other toolbars are displayed automatically when you need them. For example, Excel displays the Chart toolbar automatically when you are working on a chart.
For more information about toolbars, see Customizing Toolbars and Menus on page 65.
File Management Fundamentals
One of the advantages of working with computers is the convenience of electronic files. In this section, we describe both the usual and unusual ways you can create, open, save, and find your Excel files.
Creating and Opening Workbooks
To open existing workbooks, click the Open button (the second button on the Standard toolbar). The Open dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 2-14.

To create a new workbook, click the New button (the first button on the Standard toolbar). A fresh, blank worksheet appears. Each new workbook created in the current Excel session is numbered sequentially: Book1, Book2, and so on. Choose File, New and instead of creating a new workbook, the New Workbook task pane appears on the right side of the screen, as shown in Figure 2-15.

The New Workbook task pane allows you to perform many of Excel s most often-used file management actions, as evidenced by the headings in the task pane:
New.
Clicking the Blank Workbook icon creates just that a new blank workbook, as if you had clicked the New toolbar button.

Excel Fundamentals
From Existing Workbook.
Clicking the From Existing Workbook icon displays a dialog box similar to the Open dialog box shown in Figure 2-14 on page 30. This dialog box opens any existing Excel file as a template. This means that two things happen differently than with the Open dialog box: First, instead of opening the actual workbook, it opens a copy of it. Second, when you save the workbook, it appends a number to the end of the file name and displays the Save As dialog box, making it virtually impossible to overwrite the original file. While your computer is connected to the Internet, you can click the Templates Home Page icon to browse the Microsoft Web site for additional templates, or you can type keywords into the Search Office Online box and click the Go button to look for specific templates on the site. Excel comes with several installed templates, which are useful and are also helpful examples for a handful of Excel s zillions of formatting and layout possibilities. The dialog box shown in Figure 2-16 appears when you click the On My Computer icon. Click the Spreadsheet Solutions tab for a few installed templates.
