If a precanned filter doesn t suffice, you can create a filter query based on a broader range of recipient properties and store it in the RecipientFilter property. You can combine properties to create a filter that is as complex as you like. For example:

To illustrate the point, let s create a dynamic distribution group that is useful to administrators. In previous versions of Exchange, it was common to manage users on a server basis, so it s a good idea to have a dynamic group that sends messages to everyone whose mailbox is on a specific server so that we can advise them about important issues such as server outages for planned maintenance. The command to create a new dynamic distribution group with a recipient filter that includes all the mailboxes on an Exchange server is shown next. We have to use a custom filter in this case because ServerName is not one of the set of special properties supported by precanned filters.

This code works superbly for Exchange 2007, but poses a problem for Exchange 2010, because you cannot predict what Exchange 2010 server hosts a mailbox because the connection between database and server is broken as part of the introduction of the DAG feature (see 8, Exchange s Search for High Availability, for more information). The dynamic group created with the preceding code still works on Exchange 2010, but there is no guarantee that we can communicate with the desired target audience if the database that holds their mailboxes has moved to a different server. Therefore, we need to create a dynamic group that addresses messages to all of the mailboxes in a database rather than one that addresses them to all of the mailboxes on a server. This is slightly more difficult because Exchange requires you to pass the full distinguished name of the target mailbox database as part of the filter rather than a simple display name. The logic is probably that the full distinguished name ensures that you always use the right database. In any case, the command to create a new dynamic group to address mailboxes in the VIP Mailboxes database is as follows:

Dynamic distribution groups
Mailboxes,CN=Databases,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT), CN=Administrative Groups,CN=contoso,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services, CN=Configuration,DC=contoso,DC=com")}
Being forced to use the full distinguished name for the target mailbox database makes the command more complicated than before because the distinguished names for any Exchange object contain some historical elements that make the name longer than it needs to be. You can use the Get-MailboxDatabase cmdlet to find the full distinguished name of a mailbox database as follows. When the commands execute, the $DN variable contains the distinguished name. Be sure to use the exact value in the filter and don t insert any additional spaces between the components of the distinguished name.
$DB = Get-MailboxDatabase Identity 'VIP Mailboxes'; $DN = $DB.DistinguishedName
Before you create the new group, you can test the effectiveness of the filter by passing it to the Get-Mailbox cmdlet. If the filter works with Get-Mailbox, it will work as a custom recipient filter for a dynamic group. For example:
Get-Mailbox Filter {(RecipientType eq 'UserMailbox' and Database eq "CN=VIP Mailboxes,CN=Databases,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT), CN=Administrative Groups,CN=contoso,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services, CN=Configuration,DC=contoso,DC=com")}
Once the new group is created, you can review its properties, including the custom filter, through EMC (Figure 6-37).
