Much of the technology discussed so far has existed in one form or another for at least several versions of Exchange. The Store is powered by a database engine, and its physical instantiation is a set of databases on disk. The interesting subject is to discuss just what can be done with those databases using the new technology in Exchange 2010, which is where we go next.

many companies, their email system is a mission-critical application. Microsoft has invested much engineering talent and finance over the years to provide Microsoft Exchange Server with the ability to resist different types of failure and deliver a highly available service. The investment has spanned software engineering to improve the quality of the Exchange code base, especially in the Store and Transport subsystems, through making better use of hardware by reducing the requirement for expensive storage through leveraging other technology as it became available, such as Windows clusters and asynchronous data replication. Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 was a watershed for high availability in many ways because of the introduction of continuous log replication technology (also known as log shipping). Local Continuous Replication (LCR) is available to copy transaction logs and then replay them into a database copy on the same server; Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) uses the same approach but in the context of a two-node Windows cluster; and Standby Cluster Replication (SCR from Exchange 2007 SP1 onward) provides a solution between servers in different datacenters.
